John Lewis sales collapsed last week...

Writing on the wall for the coming year most retailers will suffer. The long leases will cause further problems for Debenhams.

Cash generation never lies. Next also looking like it is edging towards value territory, maybe after another 10-20% fall. DEB been in extreme value territory for quite a while IMO.

This co. is the next dog to the way of BHS!

You'd think so, wouldn't you? But that has been the case for a number of years and here Debenhams still is.

Very different product portfolio. Sainsbury's and Argos was a good match, not sure who would want to take on a fashion retailer in the current environment.

Next trading at massive premium to NAV, DEB trading at around 30% discount to NAV. Takeover target, same way as HOME? Very similar financial situation.

DB cut Debenhams to 'sell' from 'hold' and trimmed the price target to 52p from 60p.The bank highlighted five reasons for its sell rating. It said that after the retailer's efforts to reduce discounting, full price sales are now underperforming discount sales for the first time since 2014.It also noted that in the last 10 years, the company has not grown store-only like-for-like sales and there is a chance Marks & Spencer will begin to take its share.DB pointed out that Debenhams' UK store estate is maturing, with no openings scheduled for this year. It also argued that it is likely to remain difficult for the company to grow profits as cost inflation persists. Finally, it said Debenhams has significant long-lease exposure which is set to come on balance sheet in FY Aug-20.

According to press Debenhams has not fared well so not surprised with downgrade. Too many discounts well before Christmas too much competition.

DEB should be at an advantage to its competitors going forward because they have forward brought their currency requirements until 2018 allowing them to deliver cheaper prices and GM.

“We are fully hedged for FY2017 at an average rate of around $1.50 or c5% lower than FY2016. We are partially hedged for FY2018 and therefore the most recent fall in the value of sterling will not take full effect until spring/summer 2018.”

Debenhams River Island and considerable more retailers already have a sale on up to 50% off prior to Boxing Day. What I noticed was John Lewis weekly sales figures not basically static and tat allowing for two new stores opened in second half, which equates to about 5% increase in sales space.

Because the markets work in a mysterious way...the belief that more buyers and the price goes up and more sellers and the price goes down is a myth...
