They do it to fool naifs, who see the order board biased to one side or t`other and act on the spurious future trades offered.
On a bigger scale it confuses auto trading where billions of prices are scanned in seconds and the info. acted upon.
In the case of penny shares on AIM its low key, but it still fools some.

There is still that 350k of layering at the bottom of the buy board, it ` aint as rosy as it looks at first glance, still holding though, ready for a spike.

I think MAT was predicting, in his post, "followed by a sell off down 15/20% then another spike up.".......so I assume he was expecting about a 2/2.5p fall before another rise.
