I am always hopelessly wrong at moment but if close can survive the next few years I would have though a lot of competion will be gone as the 'merchant banks' seem to be disappearing quickly. The strategy seems right to me-a break up would have been a disaster. But what effect does the lack of inter-bank lending, drying up whole sale markets etc have on these?

looks like c.500p might be the bottom - hopefully ok results will see us climb a little further as well. financial disaster stories have been factored in and the assumption is stock markets have further to fall or will take years to stabilize/recover - i'm also happy to bet something else will probably happen. sit back and enjoy the dividend in the meantime.

I expect the weekend press will be full of reports on financials anticipating exit from their nadirs. What the heck if the UK Government is changing its self imposed borrowing rules, why shouldn't the market change its attitude to debt.
