Nomura stopped short of Jedi mind tricks whilst upgrading Cineworld (LON:CINE) shares today, but, insisted that the cinema operator’s underperforming shares now offer good value.

The group’s performance failed to meet high expectations, amid 2015’s blockbuster releases such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens and the latest instalment of the Bond franchise.

Analyst Richard Stuber highlighted that Cineworld has typically underperformed its rivals in ‘blockbuster-heavy’ years, partly due to its unique membership scheme, but, for the same reason it performs best when there are fewer big movie releases.

Some 30% of Cineworld’s box office revenue comes from the membership cards, which cost £16.90 per month and allow customers ‘unlimitedR17; screenings. Stuber highlights that the scheme sees a high renewal rate and therefore provides positive longer-term revenue visibility.

“The 2016 film slate is widely expected to be inferior to 2015 and therefore expectations for the market (and CINE) will be less inflated,” the analyst said in a note. “Nevertheless, it does include some popular franchises and is well spread out over the year.”

Nomura upgraded Cineworld to a ‘buy’, with a price target of 588p which suggests some 20% of upside to the current price of 292p.

CINE

Broker Singer Downgrades.,

Cineworld has released an in line YE trading update, with double-digit growth across the 3 revenue drivers. We were anticipating a forecast beat, so are a tad disappointed from this perspective. New openings for FY15 are broadly in line

but we note the FY16 guidance looks light relative to previous guidance. Our Buy stance has served us well for the last 18

months, but we expect the shares to consolidate at current levels over the first half of 2016 and thus move to a Hold witha 550p TP.

Total revenue growth is reported at 12.3% CC (9.1% post FX hit), split 11.6% UK (vs our 14%) and 13.7% CEE. Cineworld was always going to be a H2 story this year and so it proved to be the case with H2 numbers robust. Accordingly Box office revenue was 11.6% higher y-o-y (11.2% UK / 12.7% CEE). This helped drive 13.7% higher Retail revenue and a 13.4% uplift in Other revenue.

Fundamentally Cineworld is a roll out story and to this end 18 new sites were added in the period, 1 short of our forecast. We note the number of Satrbucks outlets increased to 17 in the year. The new opening guidance for FY16 is 13, which is broadly in line with our conservatively pitched assumption but 5 less than the broad steer given at the Augsut’15 interims. There is still no news on the vacant FD position.

Impact on earnings & valuation

Management is guiding to a full year ‘in line with current market expectations’. Our £153.5m EBITDA for FY15 remains unchanged and is broadly in line with consensus, albeit at the EPS level we are 2% ahead. Looking forward we are projecting 9% EPS growth on the back of roll-out and a solid (rather than spectacular) film line up. Our Buy stance over 2015 served us very well but we envisage the shares consolidating at current levels over H1-16, with interest in the story reviving later in the year as investors switch attention to the prospects of a bumper outlook for FY17. We fundamentally like the mid-term emerging market story at Cineworld but for now move back to a Hold with a 550p TP.,

Yes philanderer. Had to go to Vue to see this movie. First time I had been to this cinema as I am a regular Cineworld customer. Have to say that Vue do not have as good a service or offering.

Wonder if it was tipped anywhere or just a matter of delayed effect from some likely buying? Was expecting a better post-Star Wars reaction here, so perhaps just delayed and we will start to see the action. Hope so as would be a nice Xmas present ;-)
