I am just not a fan of paying out more than you have coming in. I know it's only for a while but I must have been a corner shopkeeper in a past life :)

The reason some value investors do very well is that they look at the business and ignore the chart and the fear.

I don't think ADVFN is known for having lots of posts from value investors.

ham post 6850 re: divi

i think the share price would fall through support at 120p Conn has signaled the divi
is sustainable at cover of 1 for a few years while the restructure gets completed
if he now cuts the divi to save a few quid it will send the wrong message. The
time to cut the divi was on the 23rd November.

If the share price recovers to above 200p will people still be asking for a divi cut?
i don`t think so !

WJ. How do you think the markets would react to reducing the divi to 8p for a fixed term of 2 years. Then to go back to 12p after that? Wouldn't it show that divi is less than earnings for this period (hopefully) and this would negate a lot of the questions on that call re divi? Even if the share only went back to 200p - thats still 4% divi.

i would be very surprised if this went down to 63p not without a very bad RNS
of some description anyway. I think Conn did a kitchen sink job to make sure
the next results are no worse. If you listen to at least the last 10 minutes of
the Q&A session, you can tell in his voice that this has shaken him. Also CNA is a
more diverse Company than the pure metal plays that got slaughtered under a set of market conditions that caused a perfect storm.

I suspect that Centrica has bottomed out at 134 and winter is here.
Centrica still has a captive audience for the time being.
It is just the greedy shareholders, greedy managers and directors wanting more and more profits.
Enough is never enough for these people.
All those associated with these types of companies have brought this situation upon themselves.
I suspect that this will recover to 160 or so which is where I think I read that Goldman Sachs or Deutsche Bank thought it should be.
A relative of mine was selling homeowners.solar power kits in Australia till recently .
The big utility companies have quickly offered to pay for the installations and lease the solar power system back to the owners to retain control as long as possible.
And yes, they are reducing the money they pay to the owners to buy back the electricity as greed yet again takes hold.
Most house owners seem to be unwilling or unable to fund their own solar power systems so they will remain under the control of the big boys for some time.
The Utilities companies and their mates in the government will not easily give up their cash cow.

Worked time before that as well with GLEN and HOME... As long as the company and fundamentals are good the averaging down strategy can work really well.

super

Actually I don't view re investing divis as averaging down as it does not involve adding more from your initial capital.

The whole problem with averaging down is people moving money from winning investments to losing ones.

Feels better on the day but usually ends up badly imo.

Agree if the recent low/mid to lower 130 area goes then support has failed and would expect a further move down but its not gone yet!

Would add that what ever happens averaging down is a bad strategy imo, you are basically adding more of your portfolio to a falling investment, this is very different to buying in "lots" though where you only commit a smaller percentage of what you want to invest in a share initially and add more if it falls.
