positive movement this morning, n ever mind the black run GS take the ski lift up this one as i think this may be just a valley on the way up the mountain, it is healthy as you say to have a rest as a few profit takers depart it simply opens up opportunities for buyers.....you just cant have enough insurance

Agree with most of the above except for one thing. Most of the city movers and shakers are skiing, so odd movements to be expected. In the long run can't see a down side to this share or the way the insurance is going DYOR.

Morning bigman, agreed not a "truly great" yet, just using JS words to illustrate that there is a south as well as a north. We just need the latter, over the years, to be greater than the former.

Given that the only forecasts which appear to be available are from the I de B note from back in August following the interims, it could be said the CBG share price has got a bit ahead of the game and a retraction was on the cards. In August they forecast eps 7.6 for this and 10.6 for next which at 160p gave a forward PE of 15+. True value difficult to say at present, haven't checked for a while (need to do some work, but the day job gets in the way) but I reckon the activity since August will significantly change the I de B numbers but to what extent?

It could be that somebody knows something that we mere mortals are not privy to, but as that is not possible under the rules of this game:-) We can only assume that all is well?

Can't find any notice of the prelims date, the CBG web site states final results in March so expect it to be similar to last years which were on 28th March

Good luck

GS

true words of wisdom GS, although I am not sure that I would call CBG a truely "great growth stock" yet but maybe it will mature and become one, I certainly hope so as they have the opportunity and have demonstrated the growth accross the board in profits and eps turnover etc and i reckon we will see another inprovement in the performancemarket, GS when are the numbers out ? good point on the profit taking as we close to tax year end, buying opportunity definately at this time IMHO

Mr K, we have had a good run and whilst I cannot remember the exact words I do recall Jim Slater - The Growth Stock Guru saying that all truely great growth stocks pause for breath every now again. Unless the big picture has changed and I can't see that it has, I see no reason to loose my affinity for CB. It is getting around the time of year when some people take profits to max out cap gains and the market occasionally uses it as an opportunity to shake a few out. Holding in a well run aquisitive company active in a sector undergoing a period of consolidation is good, sometimes very, very good! Time will tell ... results due back end of next month..

Can't wait till it all goes quiet again.

Good luck

GS

I do agree with you.A company i deal with called Oval Group which is a private enterprise are expanding agressively in the insurance market by aquisition and organic growth tell me there will be further consolidation and i believe this will be goodnews for CBG holders as profits will grow and always a takeover possibility.Todays blip could well be a buying opportunity down 9%.

anyone who does not consider this as share as one to have in their portfolio is mad, it simply just keeps going and i guess what puts people of is they think that they have lost all the up side but still it keeps progressing forwards, upwards and onwards...you simply cannot do without a bit of insurance in your portfolio....

Ariane,

The Pnom Penh Post isn't a bad read (about as good as the Bangkok Post :-\). I collected up a few of them wile I was in Pnom Penh- much faster than reading the online version whilst inside the country.

- a few forced evictions along with a bit of land grabbing by the ruling elite for good measure.

- but never mind because the price of real estate in Pnom Penh is skyrocketing.

Funnily enough, these two articles are from the same edition.

Oil companies would enter Cambodia on the strength of a protected investment- not because poor Cambodians would receive a windfall.

Back in Bangkok, I teach a few kids some extra classes. One of them, a Korean kid was telling me about his school- The American International School Bangkok- where there are, strangely enough no Americans. The class consists of mainly Thai, the odd smattering of Japanese and ONE Cambodian kid.

Allegedly, his family live in beautiful house - and they are the only ones to have an indoor swimming pool.

'Surley one of the lucky few Cambodians whose hard work has paid dividends in Thailand?'

'Nah, his Dad still works in Cambodia. He's on the drugs squad.'

Cambodia's former king urges royals to stay away from politics

www.chinaview.cn 2007-02-05 12:20:42

By Xia Lin

PHNOM PENH, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia's retired king Norodom Sihanouk, currently in China, has called on members of the royal family not to oppose the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) and suggested that all royal members should stay away from politics, local media reported on Monday.

"Our Princes and Princesses should avoid declaring that they are against the CPP, are fighting and shall fight against the CPP," local newspapers quoted a message posted on his website as saying.

It is fitting and time for the Khmer kingdom to imitate other Kingdoms of the world that the members of the royal family abstainfrom politics, he said.

Cambodia's current leaders could have chosen to oppose restoring the monarchy in the early 1990s, but did not, Sihanouk wrote, adding that the royals therefore should not oppose the CPP.

Cambodia could also consider providing royals with pensions in exchange for their agreement to stay out of politics, he said.

Meanwhile, the Cambodian Daily quoted Prince Sisowath Thomico, president of the Sangkum Jatiniyum Front Party, as denying opposing the CPP.

"I don't fight against the CPP. I fight against the regime which the CPP has built," he said, adding that recent history has seen royals attain notable political accomplishments, including national independence in 1953.

In addition, CPP lawmaker Nguon Ngel told the newspaper that the royals' political role could result in discord, but added that his party does not wish to initiate a law that would keep royals out of political careers.

Apart from Thomico, Prince Norodom Ranariddh, son of Sihanouk, currently presides his own party, which is reportedly an opposition one.

Some royal members also hold senior positions in the government, which is co-ruled by the CPP and the Funcinpec Party.

Back to October 2006, Sihanouk issued statements on his websiteto declare his determination to keep away from the kingdom's political scenario.

He said that he would no longer give comments about the situation in Cambodia, denying an earlier message from Prince Thomico that he should step out of retirement and once again manage the kingdom, he said.

In 1953, under Sihanouk's leadership, Cambodia won independence from France. On Oct. 6, 2004, he retired due to age and health problems, after serving his country for almost 63 years through wars and turmoil.

Since then, the royal members, mainly Prince Ranariddh, still played important role in the kingdom's politics. Ranariddh once served as first prime minister in the government.

Cambodia's Highway 78 link with Vietnam's border upgraded

The upgrade of Cambodia's Highway 78 which links with Vietnam's border started in Ban Lung town in the border province of Rattanakiri on February 4.

The 70km-long and 9m-wide Highway 78, which runs from Ban Lung through Bokeo and Oyada towns in Cambodia to Vietnam's border-gate Le Thanh, will be completed in 30 months at a cost of US $25.8 million, paid for by the Vietnamese Government's preferential credits.

Speaking at the upgrading ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong said that the two countries' co-operation in the upgrade project does not only affirm the efforts and determination to strengthen bilateral ties by both the Vietnamese and Cambodian Governments and people but also reflects time-honoured friendly co-operation between the two countries.

As soon as it is completed, the highway will benefit the Cambodian people and the Laos-Vietnam-Cambodia development triangle as it will create an additional East-West corridor connecting Cambodia's Rattanakiri province with the Central Highlands and central sea ports in Vietnam, said Deputy PM Trong.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen expressed his thanks to the Vietnamese Government and people for their whole-hearted support for Cambodia in upgrading its Highway 78.

The upgrade of Highway 78 is necessary for Cambodia's northeastern provinces, facilitating the exchange of farm products and other commodities in the region, elaborated PM Hun Sen.

This is an initial step for Rattanakiri province as well as Cambodia to integrate into the development triangle area, he affirmed.

The Cambodian PM also thanked the Vietnamese Government for its help in building a boarding school in Ban Lung town and a market in the centre of Oyada town in Rattanakiri province.

In the context of many difficulties, the sharing and assistance of the Vietnamese Government and people to the Cambodian Government and people re-affirmed the solidarity, friendship and co-operation between the two nations and people, which have been fostered through many historical periods, noted the Cambodian Governmental leader. Cambodia needs a stronger government before dealing with oil companies. The Cambodian coast is rather small compared to Thailand and Vietnam so I suspect the only reason for going in under the Cambodian flag is the free for all nature of the gangland economy.

The poor people will not benefit. Currently the Government is bulldozing them out of Pnom Penh to make way for high rise condos. The were supposed to be rehoused....

Don't do it to Cambodia just yet. The money will not be well spent and you'll probably find the neighbours running off with most of it.

Cambodia says Russia has joined a number of foreign powers eyeing Cambodia's petroleum reserves.

The President of Cambodia's National Assembly, Heng Samrin, says Russian officials have expressed interest in oil exploration off Cambodia's southern coast.

The expression of interest came during a recent meeting of regional legislators.

He says while Cambodia welcomes Russia's overtures, no firm agreement has been made.

Two years ago, petroleum was discovered by US energy giant Chevron Corporation off Cambodia's coast.

Since then, firms from France, South Korea and Japan are reportedly seeking exploration licenses.

  How Cambodia Becomes Economic Power

By Shin Chul-hoOn the first day of this year, I flew to Siem Reap, Cambodia, as part of a six-day package tour of Angkor Wat. Now I know that Angkor Wat has antiquities amazing enough to attract tourists from all over the world. But I witnessed a poverty-stricken country.

Cambodia is still an agricultural society, experiencing what Alvin Toffler refers to as the ``First Wave.¡¯¡¯

French colonial rule for nearly a century and a 30-year civil war may have hindered Cambodia¡¯s economic development.

Under the rule of Pol Pot, Khmer Rouge cadres slaughtered about 2 million of the 8 million Cambodians in the 1970s. It was a critical loss of human resources. Among the slaughtered were high-ranking government officials, businessmen and military officers that could have led Cambodia to be a far better place to live in than it is now.

I contemplated how the country could overcome its socio-economic difficulties and provide a better life for its people.

What they should do, above all, is drive away corruption.

The moment I arrived at Siem Reap-Angkor International Airport, I noticed that the airport stank of corruption.

To get a visa, visitors stand in either a $20 line or a $25 line based on whether they came to Cambodia on a business trip or on a vacation trip. People in the $25 line got their visas much faster than those in the $20 line. According to the regulations, $25 dollars buys a single-entry visa for business, and $20 buys a single-entry visa for tourism. However, 99 percent of the people in the lines were tourists. What's wrong with this picture?

The guide said that donations of money to schools by foreign charity organizations are distributed among teachers. He also said donations of school supplies such as pencils, notebooks and erasers are also distributed among teachers, who then sell the supplies to their students.

He said corruption is prevalent in every sector. With such severe corruption, no country can make progress.

Korea, too, must pass through the corruption tunnel as soon as possible.

Cambodia should also diversify its agricultural production. The economy is too reliant on rice yields. Cambodian farmers could raise cattle and poultry as Australian farmers do, and they could grow different kinds of plants. For example, the Dutch grow tulips.

Cambodians are blessed with a rich environment, so they should make good use of it.

Look around the world. The rapid destruction of rainforests and the factories scattered all over the world are causing the global warming. Water, air and land are being polluted. China's rapid industrialization is contaminating not only its own rivers, air and land but also the Yellow Sea and the air of neighboring countries.

I think skipping becoming an industrial society and focusing instead on information industry intensification would best serve Cambodia. Industrialization will inevitably lead to the destruction of the environment, the jewel of Cambodia. But information technology, especially software technology, results in huge economic gains with little pollution and little capital. India is an example of this.

When they have succeeded in creating a high-quality software industry, what will happen to Cambodia? A variety of their agricultural products will be exported to other countries, its well-preserved environment will attract tourists who not only want to see Angkor Wat, Bayon, Taprohm, the Tonle Sap but want to see the unpolluted environment. And per capita income will increase dramatically.

The Cambodian government must also address education. I had an opportunity to visit an elementary school. A volunteer teacher from England was teaching English. The teacher allowed us to look around the classroom. The students had pencils and notebooks. There were no textbooks, no computers, no storybooks, no video screens, no other teaching materials whatsoever. Only chalk and a blackboard.

Our guide talked about the poor conditions in middle and high schools as well. One book is shared by two or three students, and the student sitting in front of the book has to turn his or her head to read it. That's why many high school graduates write in awkward postures.

Wiping out illiteracy is the top priority in education. But that's not enough with the global competition. Highly trained and talented people are needed to build up a strong economy. The Cambodian government should invest in education, even though people are starving.

When the infrastructure, from hotels to transportation, is improved, agricultural reforms are made and a software miracle takes place, Cambodia will be called the second Singapore.
