ECS Distributor Gets School Retrofit Business
Engine Control Systems (ECS) announced that its distributor, K. Neal International Trucks Inc., Hyattsville, Md., has received a major contract from the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Rockville, Md. K. Neal International will supply and install 72 Purifilter DPFs, five spare filter bodies, one CombiClean DPF cleaning machine and associated installation and backpressure monitor kits.

MCPS received funding through the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) National Clean Diesel Funding Assistance Program for the retrofit of its 2003, 2004 and 2005 Thomas pusher buses equipped with Caterpillar 3126 diesel engines. Initial Purifilter installations are expected to begin later in September at the dealer and on-site at MCPS.

"Engine Control Systems and our partner, K. Neal International, are pleased to supply the ECS product line to Montgomery County Public Schools," said Ian MacDonald, ECS vice president of marketing and sales. "This is a significant win and clearly underscores our excellent reputation and strong product quality in the emissions reduction market."

The Purifilter is a passively regenerating diesel particulate filter designed to offer 90% diesel particulate reduction and meet strict California Air Resources Board Level (CARB) 3+ NO2 limits. It incorporates a silicon carbide wall flow filter substrate and advanced precious and base metal catalyst system to passively regenerate using exhaust heat.

The Combiclean DPF cleaning system is engineered to clean corderite or silicon carbine diesel particulate filters, whether passive or active filter made of cordierite or silicon carbide. The cleaning process uses a gradual temperature increase with a constant air supply during the regeneration process in order to ensure no damage to the catalytic coating or substrate material, the company said.

ECS is part of Catalytic Solutions, Inc. a global manufacturer and distributor of emissions control systems and products focused in the heavy-duty diesel, energy systems and light-duty vehicle markets.

The Honorable Daniel K. InouyeThe Honorable Thad CochranChairmanRanking MemberCommittee on AppropriationsCommittee on AppropriationsThe Capitol, S-131 113 Dirksen Senate Office BuildingWashington, D.C. 20510Washington, D.C. 20510The Honorable Dianne Feinstein ChairmanSubcommittee on Interior Committee on Appropriations331 Hart Senate Office BuildingWashington, DC 20510Dear Chairman Inouye, Ranking Member Cochran, and Chairman Feinstein:We are writing as a broad-based group from the environmental and health community, state and local governments and industry to urge you to include $1.5 billion for the DieselEmissions Reduction Act ("DERA") in the economic recovery package. It is our understanding that EPA has advised Congress that it has the capability todisburse $1.5 billion expeditiously. EPA has the administrative infrastructure in placeand has a large backlog in applications pending that cannot be funded. Additionally, theindustry has enormous excess capacity because of the recession that can be activatedquickly. The demand for funding is strong. According to a letter from GovernorSchwarzenegger, California alone needs $1.6 billion in DERA funding.Independent economic analysis shows that $1.5 billion in DERA funding can have asignificant positive impact on the economy. According to an analysis prepared by Dr.Robert Wescott, who served on the Council of Economic Advisors during the ClintonAdministration, such a level of funding could save 39,000 to 50,000 jobs and generate$6.8 billion to $8.7 billion in additional economic output. The actual economic effectdepends upon the degree of matching funds that EPA is able to generate. In the past,EPA has been able to generate $1.38 of matching funds for every $1 of federalexpenditures.A substantial increase in DERA funding will also contribute significantly toward acleaner environment. According to EPA, there are 11 million heavy duty vehicles andengines in-use today. These in-use vehicles and engines are the primary source of dieselemissions. The installation of clean diesel retrofits on the existing fleet can reduceparticulate matter emissions by over 90% and achieve substantial health benefits costeffectively. EPA estimates that $13 of health and economic benefits are generated fromevery $1 spent on the DERA program.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page 2
Letter to Chairman Inouye, Ranking Member Cochran, and Chairman FeinsteinPage TwoMoreover, increasing the installation of clean diesel retrofits through significant fundingfor DERA can generate global warming benefits. Recent studies show that black carbonfrom diesel exhaust has significant global warming potential. Clean diesel retrofitsreduce this black carbon by over 90%. Back in 2005, President-elect Obama joined a bi-partisan group of 21 other Senators toco-sponsor the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act of 2005 ("DERA"). The billsubsequently passed the Senate by a margin of 92 to 1 and was included in the EnergyPolicy Act of 2005, with the strong support of environmental groups, state governments, businesses, and trade associations. Rarely has an environmental initiative enjoyed such abroad base of support. In light of all of these factors, we respectfully request that you fund the DERA programat $1.5 billion. This constitutes good economic policy and good environmental policy, awinning combination.Sincerely,3E EnvirosciencesAgricultural Council of CaliforniaAHL-TECH Alabama State Port AuthorityAllied Grape GrowersAlmond Hullers and Processors AssociationAlternatives for Community and EnvironmentAmerican Association of Port Authorities (AAPA)American Lung AssociationAmerican Lung Association in GeorgiaAmerican Lung Association of CaliforniaAmerican Lung Association of Illinois – Greater ChicagoAmerican Lung Association of IndianaAmerican Lung Association of Iowa American Lung Association of MinnesotaAmerican Lung Association of New York State, Inc.American Lung Association of North Dakota American Lung Association of OhioAmerican Lung Association of Rhode Island American Lung Association of South Dakota American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest (ALAUM)American Lung Association of Wisconsin American Trucking AssociationsAppalachian Mountain Club, Narragansett (RI) ChapterArab Community Center for Economic andSocial Services (ACCESS)Associated General Contractors of America (AGC)Association of Equipment ManufacturersAtlantic Systems IncAudubon Society of Rhode IslandAutotherm Division Enthal Systems Inc.Back of the Yards Neighborhood CouncilBASF Catalyst LLCBettendorf Trucking Blue Diamond GrowersBreathe CaliforniaBrett Hulsey, Dane County Supervisor (Madison, WI)Caldwell County Health DepartmentCalifornia Association of Wheat GrowersCalifornia Association of Winegrape GrowersCalifornia Cattlemen's AssociationCalifornia Citrus MutualCalifornia Cotton Ginners AssociationCalifornia Cotton Growers AssociationCalifornia Dairy CampaignCalifornia Farm Bureau FederationCalifornia Forestry AssociationCalifornia Grain and Feed Association

Twenty-two percent of the venture funding has just gone to five companies: Nanosys, Quantum Dot, Molecular Imprints, Frontier Carbon and Catalytic Solutions. Acquisitions will be the fate of many start-ups, Modzelewski said.

Nanotechnology is the science of building products out of components measuring less than 100 nanometers, usually designer molecules. (A nanometer is a billionth of a meter, and the word is derived from the Greek root "nano," which means "dwarf.") At this level, many materials, such as gold and silicon, begin to exhibit novel properties.

Self-replication is another distinguishing feature of many nanotech projects. Executives with Palo Alto, Calif.-based Cambrios, for example, believes it will be possible to build electronic devices by controlling chemical reactions, similar to the way clamshells are created though a reaction between inorganic minerals and highly specialized proteins secreted by a bivalve.

The United States remains the largest nano nation in terms of money, according to the report. U.S. governments will spend around $1.6 billion on grants and nano science, or 35 percent of the total worldwide coming from the public sector. All of Asia will spend $1.6 billion, while Europe will invest $1.3 billion.

TermiNOx approved for EPA Emerging Technology List

Catalytic Solutions' ECS TermiNOx D selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system has been approved by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for inclusion on the National Clean Diesel Campaign's Emerging Technology List.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (stimulus bill) provides about $20 million in new funding to support use, development, and commercialization of emerging technologies that reduce emissions from diesel engines.

TermiNOx D, a urea-based SCR system designed to reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions from exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and non-EGR diesel engines, earned placement on the Emerging Technology List by meeting requirements of the Diesel Emission Reduction Program Provisions under the Energy Policy Act of 2005.

The system is approved for use in the retrofit of 1998-2006 model year on-road heavy-duty diesel engines. It reduces the emission of particulate matter by 25%, carbon monoxide by 85%, hydrocarbons by 85%, and nitrogen oxides by 65%.

Only technologies that have been approved and placed on EPA's Emerging Technology List qualify as emerging technologies for the purpose of funding solicitation. The list can be found at www.epa.gov/cleandiesel/prgemerglist.htm.

look at the backers VC Arm of Volvo Leads $14 Million Investment in Series B Funding for SDCmaterials, Inc.
Filed under: Venture Capital News - admin @ 8:26 am
SDCmaterials, Inc. has announced today that it has closed $14 million in series B funding with Volvo Technology Transfer leading the funding. VTT is the venture arm of Swedish car maker, Volvo and it manly invests in companies that Volvo has an interest in. VTT also has an industrial arm together with Volvo, manufacturing trucks, and VTT is the second largest truck maker in the world.

Other investors participating in this round of funding include Invus Financial Advisors, BASF Venture Capital GmbH., and other private investors.

SDCmaterials is a company that is based in Temple, Arizona and has unique nano-material fabrication and integration processes that deliver significant benefits to customers who are reaching the limits of more orthodox production.

The catalysts that are manufactured by SCDmaterials are unique in that they reduce the consumption of precious metals and improve performance, as well as increasing the longevity of emissions and chemical production applications. Furthermore, SDC ceramics additives also make their ceramics components stronger and more fracture resistant and therefore more appealing to military armor applications. The company was founded in 2004 and has been dedicated to improve the automotive industry with its nano-material fabrications and processes.

According to Maximilian Biberger, CEO of SDC Materials; having VTT investing in the company is a very significant event for SDCmaterials. Because VTT is the world's second largest truck maker, SDCmaterials will have access to accounts that can generate enormous profit from its catalysts. The fact that VTT has chosen to invest in SDCmaterials means that they believe in the company and have confidence in the technology that SDC Materials produces for them.

According to Anders Brannstrom, CEO of VTT; the materials that are manufactured by SDCmaterials are a great opportunity for VTT to reduce their manufacturing costs, by incorporating their catalysts into the trucks that VTT manufactures. Furthermore, the technology that SDCmaterials offers also makes a good investment opportunity for VTT and Volvo.

VTT or Volvo Technology Transfer AB is the corporate vc arm of the Volvo Group and is part of the Swedish automotive complex, building heavy-duty trucks as well as cars. Volvo has had a strong presence in Europe and North America for over 80 years and over that period of time, the Volvo Group has built a reputation of making transportation vehicles that are of high quality and good performance.

ECS Purifilter Plus gets EPA verification

Catalytic Solutions Inc.'s Heavy-Duty Diesel Systems business unit announced its ECS Purifilter Plus emissions reduction product has received Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verification.

The verification is for reducing harmful emissions of particulate matter by 90%, carbon monoxide by 75% and hydrocarbons by 85% for the retrofit of 1994 through 2006 model year non-exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) heavy-duty diesel engines, the company said.

"We are pleased with the addition of this product to our already leading range of retrofit products which have received EPA and CARB verification," said Charles F. Call, CEO. "As the number of retrofit product verifications we receive increases, so does our target market. Reducing harmful emissions created by diesel engines is a critical priority, as evidenced by the recently approved stimulus funding of $300 million under the EPA's Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) program being made available to heavy-duty diesel on-road vehicle and off-road equipment owners to retrofit their engines to reduce diesel emissions."

The company also announced the Purifilter Plus earned conditional verification, satisfying EPA's verified device funding requirements for the purpose of sales of eligible retrofits. Full verification is expected by providing EPA with testing plans and completing a testing program by March 2010.

The ECS Purifilter Plus is a hybrid diesel particulate filter system employing both passive and active regeneration and is CARB approved for heavy-duty, on-road diesel engines, the company said
