Richard, that's why it's low risk. I've seen plenty drills that were sure things end up in dust. 40% COS gives you a 60% chance of dust. You pays your money...

Mr Roper, I wouldn't agree with your comment that if it's a duster then it doesn't matter to Xom. A drill of this size matters to any company, regardless of their market cap.
Anyway, it's not going to be a duster. Apparently they've looked into this and given it a bit of thought.

Xom have a market cap of 360bn dollars. That should tell you why this drill is low risk for them. If it's a duster, it doesn't matter.

I think what he means is that Exxon consider it to be low risk to themselves on whatever basis they judge these things. There are no certainties in this game. Personally I consider it to be towards the lower end of a very high risk activity, ie oil exploration.
