Energy Storage & Flow Batteries

For those of you new to the topic, the energy storage market is set to take off like a rocket, running apace with the renewable energy market and the boom in electric vehicle sales.

Since wind and solar energy come and go, energy storage fills a critical gap in terms of availability and reliability. That goes for utility-scale operations and the booming small-scale sector consisting of homes, businesses, and other relatively small users.

So far, lithium-ion (Li-ion) technology has staked a claim to the gold standard for energy storage in terms of performance relative to cost. To gild the lily, Li-ion batteries are easily scalable — hence the Tesla Motors Li-ion battery and coming Gigafactory.

Best known for its application to the already-legendary Tesla electric vehicle, the Tesla battery was recently introduced to the small-scale stationary energy storage market in the form of the Powerwall battery, and the company is also diving into the utility-scale market.

Flow Battery Vs. Tesla Battery Smackdown Looming
June 21st, 2015 by Tina Casey

Yes, they went there. A little-known startup energy storage company called UET just announced a major milestone for its latest flow battery project, and the folks over there couldn’t resist the opportunity to take a poke at the much-publicized Tesla battery, too.

The new UET flow battery is part of a major energy storage project supported by the US Energy Department. The goal is to compare and contrast the performance of flow batteries with lithium-ion batteries — such as the Tesla battery — when it comes to utility-scale performance and grid integration. So, hold on to your hats, this could get interesting.

try this... search for jabil and UTC nothing, no news stories relating to the manufacture of VRFB,s

search REDT and Jabil, can find articles about manufacture of VRFB,s

Jabil asked Redt if they could manufacture for them!!!

Jabil reduce the size and cost of REDT,s battery, was this a trade done with UTC???

Could Jabil have sights on a collaboration of REDT and Vionx???

Is this the need for Camco to get 100% of REDT????

John Wards statement 5 years for worldwide distribution????

UTC licensed technology????

did Jabil reduce REDT,s battery size and cost by using UTC,s IDFF technology... ??????

bobby.ifa clearly you are not familiar with the cogs of industry, they take time to turn...seeing as Gigha is about to be installed now how can it not be current.. it has taken REDT over 10 years to develop the right product, this is not an embarrassment, this is thorough development....they do not want to put out a product that does not do what it says on the tin......that is why Jabil asked redt if they could manufacture REDT,s product...Jabil know...

This is OLD news. The contract has been over-running by nearly a year, so don't falsely create this as a new worthy item, it's an embarrassment it's taken so long.

Electrical energy storage is seen as the next key step in enabling the advance of low carbon generation. The UK Government has set a target for more than 23GW of renewable energy generation by 2020. A modernised grid will require a minimum of 2GW (5%) in new distributed storage for cost effective delivery of variable generation from renewables.

Storage is one of the fastest moving areas of innovation and the UK is taking a lead in developing low carbon technologies, including energy storage; the DECC competition has been designed to encourage innovation among SME companies in this field.

Conventional batteries have proved unsuited and short lived for deep cycling applications; a ten year development programme at REDT has resulted in a versatile new energy technology able to address storage needs from small 5kW solar powered Telecom masts ultimately up to 10MW grid connected wind and solar farms.

To this end this DECC project looks to install a 1.26mWh Vanadium Redox Flow battery on the island linked to the constrained Enercon E33 to relieve the otherwise constrained 105kW of the 4th wind turbine. Being positioned 'behind the meter' the battery can store power and release at times when there is capacity on the grid. This not only enables the community of Gigha to access the additional power and thereby income, but allows this technology to be prototyped in a real world environment. This purpose designed and built battery could show the way for other rural comunities to harness the full potential of their renewable power

Camco Clean Energy plc is pleased to announce that REDT* has won a major funding award of £3.6 million through the Department for Energy and Climate Change (“DECC”) Energy Storage Technology Demonstration Competition toward the demonstration and pre-commercialisation of a 1.26MWh utility scale system of its grid scale flow battery technology. REDT has developed a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery (VRFB) which has important and unique benefits in managing the rapid worldwide growth in renewable energy generation.

Highlights

The DECC award provides for the demonstration of REDT’s successful storage technology to provide utility scale storage
The energy storage market is forecast to reach €15 billion in 2020 and to be €26 billion in 2030
REDT’s 1.26MWh storage project is designed to demonstrate a cost effective solution for the UK grid and to benefit long term energy prices in the UK and elsewhere.

The proposed 1.26MWh VRFB storage system will be located on the island of Gigha, situated a few miles off the Kintyre peninsula, and with limited connection to the mainland via an ageing subsea cable. Project partners include Scottish and Southern Energy – Power Distribution (SSE), EA Technology Ltd., Community Energy Scotland (CES) and Gigha Green Power Ltd. (GGPL).

The Iona label is indeed a curiosity. It looks as though it has been added to the video in an edit run.

I don't think we knew about an Iona order, perhaps it is destined for the island after its initial demonstration duties?

Or perhaps this size of unit is being called the Iona!

Anyway what's wrong with the Iona label as something is not quite level with the application or does the division in the cover slope down to the right and why would it have been placed over this cover split unless it is some kind of tamper security.

Looks good though and well done Camco.

Progress at last!!

Now bring on the seeding info followed by further sales!

Interesting comment from Mr Greaves at FinnCap....

Extract:

"FinnCap analyst Raymond Greaves, in a note, said: “We believe that Camco has many sales leads for its storage system and the presence of an operating demonstration unit should enable it to start converting these leads into firm orders.”"

The Energy Storage System appears impressive.

Any thoughts as to the sign on the unit, namely REDT with "Iona" below?
