24/5/2012 21:01 | Yes, good results - Caledonia will perform better than most over the long term. They seem to be moving the dividend up a notch as well, with more to follow so that is encouraging. | topvest
24/5/2012 09:56 | I have just read the annual results. I like Caledonia's long term strategy. I notice that Avanti Communications was one of the reasons for the underperformance in the last year. I have a significant holding in Avanti which I amassed after the big fall last year. I agree with Caledonia that the fall is largely due to sentiment rather than a problem with Avanti. I expect Avanti's share price to recover this year and this should help reduce Caledonia's discount. EDIT: Upon re-reading this post, this is not meant as a tip for Avanti Communications; Avanti is much more risky than Caledonia which I think is a good long term investment at a ridiculous discount. | biggest bill
24/5/2012 09:21 | Fast rising dividend too. Should make it a good long-term investment. | 1nf3rn0
23/5/2012 14:08 | The discount has now risen to over 30% which is hugely out of line with other global investment trusts. This is even more surprising since the company is steadily buying back shares. I have decided to double my investment in this trust because I can't see the discount staying at this level for long. | biggest bill
11/5/2012 04:55 | Purchase Beefs-Up Share Value On the 2nd May Caledonia announced that it had bought back and cancelled 20,000 of its own shares, beefing-up the value of its equity: Transaction in own shares Caledonia Investments plc ("Caledonia") announces that on 2 May 2012 it purchased from J.P. Morgan Securities Ltd. 20,000 of its own ordinary shares of 5p each at an average price of 1411.53 pence per share. The purchased shares will be cancelled. Following the above purchase of shares, Caledonia's issued share capital includes 57,296,301 ordinary shares of 5p each with voting rights. P.S. Here's a couple of links about SCLP, one of the hottest stocks at the moment: | northernlass
22/2/2012 11:57 | Company buying in steadily at £15 plus. Fact sheet says they have bought back 421,550 shares costing £6.1m this year.....interesting | trustman
29/11/2010 10:15 | I see that the satellite launch for Avanti communications was successful. This is good news for Caledonia since Avanti Communications makes up 6% of its net assets. | biggest bill
15/10/2010 17:14 | I bought in on Monday after I read about the >25% discount - looks like good timing. I'm also in BTEM who CLDN are big holders of. | 1nf3rn0
15/10/2010 11:54 | I am amazed that Caledonia is trading at a 19% discount. The average discount in global growth investment trusts is 10%. Given Caledonia's superior record in increasing its nav over the last ten years, its discount should be less than the average, not more. | biggest bill
15/2/2010 19:40 | Which one to choose? Caledonia Investments and RIT Capital Partners, are two big Investment Trusts with strong backing of wealthy families with an impressive money making pedigree over several generations. Over the last three and five years RIT, backed by one arm of the Rothschild dynasty, has outperformed handsomely Caledonia, which has the backing of the Cayzer shipping clan. Caledonia is trading on a 20.17% discount to NAV compared with RIT's 5.74%. The market clearly believes that RIT is the better bet over the long term, as opposed to the short term. Are there any dissenting voices out there? | manchesterbill
28/1/2010 21:38 | Not as keen on NAS. A good record, but run for and by Mr Mills. He and his investment manager earn a lot and there is never a dividend. Will keep watch though as investment record is quite strong. | topvest
27/1/2010 10:30 | topvest - I dipped my toe in for the first time yesterday at £15 hence the new thread to monitor things. I like the look of the discount and more importantly the underlying portfolio (Close, BTEM, QED,...). NAS has been another recent purchase for the same two reasons. These ITs which only give a NAV once a month and have a fairly concentrated quoted portfolio offer an opportunity if one likes the underlying stocks. The share price often moves with the market but the NAV has very little correlation IMO. Loverat - Hated my time at Forest. Too small a club. Doesn't compare to my time Hillsborough. Those were the days ... | deswalker
26/1/2010 21:46 | Great company this. Followed for a while on and off and very recently bought some shares. Quality company for the long term. Good time to set up a thread! | topvest

19/9/2009 12:32 | A director sold and there appears to have been a bit of a panic, however the discount is 17% now and the chart shows the uptrend is intact albeit at the lower end of the range. IMO a good point to buy. | shano2
19/9/2009 11:04 | why the big drop yesterday ? not ex div and nonews announcement ! | arja
10/9/2009 08:59 | About one third of CLDNs portfolio is unquoted and I believe was last valued in March right at the bottom of the market. Since then 3i and Electra have for example doubled in price. Assuming something similar has happened to the value of CLDNs unquoted investments we are looking at an nav of well north of £20. Presumably we will find out in November .Looks interesting but dyor ! | bolador

09/3/2005 19:15 | Although a complete novice I agree with you F Hog.Other peoples opinions are just that and if we wish to search them out hopefully we are capable of doing that. A BB is where we voice opinions and share information for discussion !!! Being naive about trading is the "notification of interests of directors" issued today at 4.30pm the directors receiving remuneration in respect of employment. Sorry for being thick (ish). | minor detail |
