You are better off looking at the commitments compared to the Net Asset Value of the Company at 24M. I am not sure how much has been provided for if for instance Baldwins UK had to pay say £10M to get out of underwriting the leases (one year's committment).

Still leaves 14M even if that were the "loss on sale" against a market cap of 3M.

Rayrac - I have planning proposals in now for another extention which will be a tad trickier in some ways than my first. The guy I used before has moved to Bath. Are you on for the West Midlands (near Warwick University) ?

I'm a retired builder and although I'm not looking for work at all in any shape or form, I would be happy to give general advice on construction procedures, tips etc'.

If you could find someone like me in your area, ie, a retired builder. I'm certain one may find that for a case of decent wine, he would/might help!

Are our email addresses stored somewhere on advfn? if not I'll post mine up. No phone contacts though!

Check out NWD for a quick profit. MMs obviously short of stock, worth buying a few for a quick 20% gain.

Is anybody interested in organising the building of their own home or maybe building houses for investment?

Martin, there is a guy called David Jackson who does a similar thing to me but in your area. www.davidjackson.co.uk (Quantiguide). Make an enquiry with him and I'm sure he will have a bit of knowledge about useful plots in the area you are looking for. Please mention my company Granshaw when you contact him. I operate in the South East whereas he specialises in East of England.

We've been vaguely house-hunting (bad timing market-wise, but there's not much choise really) and finding it hard. It had occurred to me that self-build was a good way to get what we want, but again finding a plot in another part of the country is hard.

re: buildnet: what's the URL? - www.buildnet.com doesn't quite seem the thing.

Agreed wilsonn. Getting the right plot is by far the biggest problem. There is a web site called Buildnet which has a plot finder service.

Getting land is the problem. Assistance with getting good plots in the right area would be useful. Can you hire land buyers?

The reason I posted was that I currently run a Project Management Company to assist self builders who have limited knowledge of how to go about realising their project. As a piece of market research I was interested in how many people who use ADVFN would like to build their own homes.

In answer to your question MartinC, providing your project is well managed and properly built it should be substantially cheaper than buying a "Wimpey" home. However most people don't do it cause its cheaper but because you can get substantially more for the same money.

I have just started building two house one for my own occupation.

It is all a bit hairaising (not being a builder)and you need to keep in control. For example when the engineer set out the position of the houses he was 12feet out and I had to make him do ut again.

I would be happy to share some of the costings with interested posters but probably not on the BB.

I'd love to in principle, but I feel my total ignorance of building might be a handicap. If we did it, it wouldn't self-build, but employ-architect-and-builders. Any idea how the costs might work out compared to buying an 'off the shelf' house?
