Higher yielding defensives gaining support again, BATS trading over £50 atm.

Not sure i would class BT as a defensive following recent events, but hey ho.

Is 4.5% really a good return!! Plenty of other places to park cash that beat that.
With no growth on the horizon wheres the reason to buy?

Yes but no one is arguing that (with hindsight) 500 was a good time to buy. I can just see people discussing that they believe it is good value now?

The yield is only good if the share price keeps on going up!...anybody who bought shares around 480p - 500p thinking the yield was good but now their capital has taken a hit...they are now locked in hoping for the best...

It is an hypothesis! I used it to demonstrate the bizarre situation where people are pleased they have got more shares in their dividend being reinvested than they expected - because of the share price falling in this instance. Whichever way you pack it that should be something of concern.

In no way whatsoever does my hypothesis imply I believe the company is going bust or in reality you can get a company of zero value paying infinite dividends.

Josh - agreed. Was replying to Minerve the millionaire trying to turn a valid comment into a 'hypothesis' and using a terrible example of an infinite number of shares, that wouldn't cost anything but pay a dividend being a bad thing to argue it.

BT have used these accountancy issues to try and cover up the bigger picture .They've spent too much establishing a digital TV service without foreseeing the acceleration into the martlet of big boys Netflix and Amazon . The way people subscribe/ watch tv has rapidly change and is constantly reinventing itself .BT , Sky and Virgin will all struggle over the next few years

Not sure they would pay a dividend if they go bust.

Yes, let the shares fall.

Take the hypothesis to its extreme and you have a dividend reinvestment which is an infinite number of shares in a company worth zero! Yippee!
