"There will undoubtedly be some areas where the demand for Broadband ADSL does not balance with the cost of upgrading the exchange. For these areas, BT is searching for alternative technical and commercial solutions.

Already, BTopenworld has launched a 2-way satellite service aimed at SMEs, with monthly rental starting at £59.99 for the single-user service.

BT's Wholesale division started a trial of a low cost 1-way satellite service at the end of May 2002. Following market feedback the 1-way satellite trial concluded. A new trial is planned for the New Year with revised commercial terms, if sufficient market demand exists.

In June 2002, BT Wholesale launched a six month technical trial of a fixed wireless service, for the delivery of Broadband services. The service based on a Mesh Wireless solution developed by Radiant Networks delivered Video on Demand (VoD) content to households in Pontypridd taking part in the trial. Testing highlighted the relative immaturity of the technology and the need for BT to continue exploration of Mesh Wireless and other technologies."

They said it immature technology, another promise Blair has not delivered on, by the end of the 1st term the whole of Britain will join the 21st century blah, blah, blah.

I have broadband and couldn't live without it I am affraid.

to find out how near you area is to getting it

to compare providers, BT are terrible considering they charge £6 more a month than most!

"what about the local businesses, home workers, private users etc who would benfit immediately in these areas, and then by natural word of mouth in the community, critical mass would be achieved and BT would reap the profits"

-- this sort of business model never worked for the dot coms,,

It looks as if it could be years before some of those exchanges are converted, mine included.
I registered an interest in broadband about 18 months ago, I wonder would BT suss it if i register another 240 times:-)

Why the hell does there have to be a minimum level of interest before converting the exchange?

These dinosaurs really take the biscuit, what about the local businesses, home workers, private users etc who would benfit immediately in these areas, and then by natural word of mouth in the community, critical mass would be achieved and BT would reap the profits.

By not providing, you cannot provoke the interest. My, they are a sad company indeed. Please, someone take them out.

Anyone interested in a broadband connection may be interested in this link:-
The link will take you to a BT site dealing with progress for all the exchanges in the UK.
I was unpleasantly surprised to find that my local exchange still has to have about another 240 people to register interest before they consider adapting the exchange.

There seems to be quite a lot of other exchanges still awaiting what apprears to be several hundred of people to register before BT carry out any adaptations.

Have been using comdirect since last year & had no problems at all + they nearly always deal inside the spread.
If dealing in size for mm stocks using a traditional broker will save you a lot of wedge.
