12/8/2016 23:17 | July 21, 2016 : "Over 500,000 tonnes of fertilisers is expected to be supplied to the COMESA region under the ACTESA/AFPO programme to support smallholder farmers to improve productivity for an initial period of 36 months, since the signing of the agreement in August 2015. COMESA-ACTESA chief executive officer Argent Chuula said the first delivery of the fertiliser was on July 9 to 320 agro-dealers in Mkushi and Mumbwa. He said each agro delivery is expected to serve about 20 farmers and the project will be replicated in other COMESA countries such as Malawi and Uganda, as soon as the ongoing negotiations are concluded. Mr Chuula said about one million farmers in the region will access inputs through the ACTESA/AFPO programme within the next two years. He said the demand for high performance fertiliser in the region is rising fast and needs to be addressed quickly with cost effective, quality and reliable supply. “The importance and scale of this programme cannot be overstated" | pegasus59 | |
