The management shake-up comes a day before BAE posts its annual results, which are expected to show the company has turned a corner after several years of uncertainty caused by constrained military spending. Revenues are forecast to have grown by 4pc to £18.7bn, with pre-tax profits more than 10pc higher at at £1.23bn.

The company has had a good year. Major programmes have moved ahead including work starting on the massive Dreadnought nuclear submarine programme, a ramp-up in production of F-35 fighter jets and confirmation of the new generation of Type 26 frigates.

Austria sues Airbus for €1.1 billion over fraudulent Eurofighter deal


Austria sued Airbus SE on Thursday for willful deception on the true purchase price, deliverability and equipment of Eurofighter jets that were purchased by the defense ministry for €2 billion in 2003.

Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil said at a news conference in Vienna that damages could potentially amount up to €1.1 billion.

“As defense minister, I consider it my duty to report facts relevant for criminal prosecution and to claim compensation for the Austrian taxpayers’ damage,” Doskozil said.

The claims were filed after a long investigation by Austrian and German authorities into supposed bribery allegations made against the Eurofighter consortium in 2007, when Austria changed its initial order of 18 jets to 15.

Airbus builds the Eurofighter in collaboration with BAE systems and Leonardo, meaning the lawsuit is filed against corporations from four different EU member states: Britain, Italy, Germany and Spain.

Airbus was unable to comment at the present time, although a spokesman noted that it would comply with any legal inquiries.

“We can however confirm that in recent years we have supported the activities by the legal authorities, for instance through (our) own investigations,” he said.

BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair, Norfolk, Virginia, is being awarded a $42,941,944 firm-fixed-price contract for USS Vicksburg (CG 69) fiscal 2017 special selected restricted availability (SSRA).

The SSRA work consists of multiple ship alterations and miscellaneous repairs. The work package contained 99 work items, of which 92 items formed the base work package and 7 items are designated as options.

Work will involve ship repair, and modernization. This contract includes options, which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract to $45,997,390. Work will be performed in Norfolk, Virginia, and is expected to be completed by September 2017

BAE Systems has warned that giving a rival company the contact to build the new Type 31 warship could breach its 'terms of business agreement' (Toba) made with the government in 2009.

Although the Toba guarantees BAE a steady flow of warship work until 2024 in return for efficiency savings, November's Parker report urged ministers to kick-start work on a cheaper new warship, the Type 31, to win export orders as the Type 26 frigates made by BAE were proving too costly.
