I am sure I am not the only one hurting but today seems to be more painful than any of the previous days. Its hitting stocks that are not directly related to china or commodities. Put back my retirement by several months..

Unfortunately there is very little about the market that is encouraging unless you are a shorter.

It will do well if it holds at 480-475. If it is unable to do so then 460 is likely.

So no smiling more a grimace.

I agree with you both having come from the days of rate books and personally prepared quotes. It was enjoyable years ago. I've just come off the phone to a private health company questioning why I had the audacity to get ill and make a claim just a month after my wife moved jobs and joined the scheme. Of course the inference was a pre-existing condition....feel free to waste your time and money getting my medical records...whatever happened to utmost good faith? Rant over!

Much as I dislike having to deal with Aviva as regards like, pensions and equity release, as their procedures and staff are a nightmare, to say the very least and still keep it polite, the business is doing well. Swallowing the fact that most people working in offices today are too young to know just how bad they are, and their customers too have no idea how straightforward, polite and reasonable doing business was in the past, so they just accept the pain as a necessary part of dealing with things, I am long Aviva.

The dividend is good, there is a good chance of capital growth as world economies improve, and Aviva are in the financial sector which must prosper if all areas of business and commerce are going to improve, as I believe that they will going forward.

So ... as long as I don't have to be in the same building as today's office workers and bosses, I can tolerate things just enough to count my profits backing the companies that are making money, and to relax in the knowledge that I'll never have to rub shoulders with that great unwashed multitude of people, lol.

"Aviva has reported a strong set of first half results this morning, delivering operating earnings 6% ahead of consensus expectations driven predominantly by a stronger result from life insurance (UK and Asia), in addition to a marginally better general insurance result (Canada). The dividend growth of 15% year on year was strong, as expected. The Friends Life cost synergy delivery is ahead of schedule, with management reiterating its 2015 guidance.

All-in, this is an encouraging set of results; we expect a positive reaction from the shares today."

Gone are the days of worrying about the results under Moss and whether we will be making a profit or loss - and wondering when the next reorganisation will be taking place. These are a strong hold for me, just quietly working away in the background rather than being at the forefront of my holdings.

Perhaps the increase in yield may appeal to the former friends holders who wanted a higher yielding share?
