My guess is it's more that it's the sort of company which makes steady but unspectacular progress, and nowadays people are either getting out of the market, or are chasing spectacular gains from (even more) grossly undervalued stock. A large part of this company is held by big institutions. I was in around 9p, and I'm happy to hold for the longer term; I don't mind hanging onto the institutions' coattails. I'm not convinced enough to average down, though I probably ought to.

The thread header is nicely juxtaposed with the graph...

Where's this company going,Company building up assets with capital from sharholders. There is very little news, share price slowly eroding 60% since listing. Stakeholder buying shares still falling, i fear the worst some deal going off in the background wg=hich will leave small shareholder shafted.

I've had a quick look at their latest accounts (to 31/03) from the website:

Board isn't overloaded for size of company; remuneration is low (though only floated in 08/07 so need to wait and see on that).

No director shareholdings! (Once they start buying, I might!!)

Kaupthing S&F seem to have picked up 23% of the shares recently, from disposals by other instis. Not all that reassuring!

Seem to have a long-term holding plan, and disposals to date have been pretty profitable. Valuations are "independent" but I'd like to know more - after all, everyone in this game knows everyone else, I'd have thought.

My decision - wait and see.

Hello there, Hectorp!

I'd be very surprised if this isn't marked up 2p or so tomorrow! So a bit of patience anyway.

Before investing, I'd need to research more on rare coins as an investment, and look at how much the board of AVR are taking out of the company which might be no more than a hobby for them.

hi jonwig.
Mr Temple is of course already a coin investor in his own right. Is this the best moment however to invest in this little company. I wonder. I see this share fell 15% in recent weeks perhaps following the gold price down from $960 to $740?
IF they buy more gold with their £2m cash soon, .. but many believe gold will still fall to $600.. on other hand, this is of course a 'rare coin' business, to an extent anyhow, though I put the rise in buying around 20th OCtober to a downturn in the markets and panic sentiment in many.

I am the 'converted' having rushed to buy gold recently so I may not need extra exposure here. But I like the look of them..

Peter Temple, FT Weekend Money:

I have, however, recently bought a small holding in Avarae Global Coins, an Aim-listed rare coin investment fund. On asset grounds, it looks interesting. It has a market value of just £6.4m at my buying price, but a portfolio of coins worth £8.5m and cash in the bank of £2.5m. I see this as an adjunct to my own investments, increasing my exposure to the market and buying in at a discount to underlying value.

SP will be marked up tomorrow.

H-P, can't comment about coins during recession as it's something I've never followed, but demand for, and price of, physical gold is far higher than official price of around $740/oz. Coins, of course, carry a premium anyway, whether common-garden Krugers or rare stuff.

Online seasrches throw up such stuff as this:

... which doesn't seem completely unbiased!

NAV at 31/03 was 10.7p. Who does their valuations?

Hi
How do coins generally perform as an investment during a recession?

I do this myself so no need for me to invest here.

Also I note that the website isn't up and running yet. Seems like the company is doing things backwards. Surely the website should be functional ASAP even before a stock market listing.

It's more fun investing in rare coins yourself though although admittedly it takes a lot of study etc to get up to speed.

I think this looks quite an intresting way of buying into gold and rare coins, currently my understanding is that they use funds raised to buy stock , and plan to sell at a later date when ethier the base gold prices rises, or the price of rare sought after coins also rise. given the uncertainty ahead i think this offers a good diversity option for investment over the next 18-24months
