In my view the providers of better and faster ways to connect will win

'Exactly' one word, latency issues

So if I understand this discussion correctly, what has happened is that somebody had an idea to launch a satellite, got £gazillions of cash to pay for it and then went ahead and sent it into space, although there was little or no need for such a satellite, in the vaque, but forlorn hope that somebody somewhere might be half interested in it one day. Yeah right!

Or there is another view - "the world is going mobile. The days of the pc are numbered. You will soon do all your computing on mobile devices - smartphones/tablets/smartbooks/netbooks with all the data and services stored/running in the cloud." (Sheep-herder on Arm BB)

In my view the providers of better and faster ways to connect will win - that is why AVN and its fellow providers are heading on up despite all this nonsense. But WTFDIK

Read all above with interest. Whatever is said the thing we all want to see is the share price moving up--not counting short term shorters.
Lets hope for continued positive news. Good luck all.

I freely admit to being a technical ignoramous but having ploughed through the weekend's offerings about threats to AVN's satellite service, 3 (layman's!) thoughts occur to me -
1) If there was a cheap and easily available analogue alternative which negates the need for satellite, why was this not picked up and considered during due diligence by the AVN Board (who commissioned the very expensive satellites), their bankers/advisers, and parties to the recent fundraising?
2) Why are big names such as BT signing up for the service? and
3) To the bloke in Kent who says he ain't signing up for no satellite service, thank you, surely the point is that all AVN's sales are to service providers rather than individual customers, aren't they? So if he's with BT, Virgin or whoever, he'd better get on to them saying he refuses to take a satellite link and they'd better get a wire to him pronto. Good luck!

This rather destroys his arguments.Security, speed and reliability are major issues and challenges...

David Williams, chief executive of Avanti, the firm that built the satellite, was in bullish form about the prospects for satellite broadband, claiming that he has enough spectrum licenses to send another 20-odd into space.

Operating at a higher frequency than normal TV satellites means Hylas can cram more data into its transmissions, said Williams, with consumers, businesses and even the military set to benefit.

He revealed that 25 per cent of the capacity of Hylas 1 has already been sold, which is an impressive start, and claimed that the service would be particularly attractive to firms including banks and petrol stations, which will appreciate its "ubiquity and security".

"It's a secure and resilient network - once the satellite is up and running its hardly ever stops," he said. "It's also very difficult to hack into a satellite signal - everything passes through a highly secure gateway, not the multiple aggregation points and servers [of fixed broadband], which are all points of weakness."

Incidents such as the large scale outage of BT's broadband network earlier this month will only add more weight to Williams' argument, and despite the millions being invested by BT and rival Virgin in new fibre infrastructure, it is unlikely they will be able to connect the entire country without looking to the heavens for some hel

Streuth you guys are deluded. Where is my band of merry men it's just little old me with 1 'nickname' on all BB's. All I do is point out facts that others ignore.

RDG on iii has a brother in law in the company, I wonder what his ID is on here.

I might check LSE to see if you have started on there. If I respond you will see my nickname it's under the guise of a really covert clever idea to make it seem like many are deramping. Superg.

Some don't know the meaning a deramp or ramp. Ramp is a term for false information. Point out to me what is false in what I say.

Ask avanti how many employee's benefit from the EBT. They won't answer.

Best of luck

To be honest I doubt any big contract news is around the corner. Otherwise the directors would not have been able to sell when they did.

yes we need some more positive news on contract wins which will settle the share. its been taking the same trend for the last week, down in the morning on low volume and recovering in the afternoon.
i have seen superg bickering on the iii board which is normally attended by informative posters instead of the bickering nonsence that he spouts.he has his opinion and so do we but why on earth keep going on about it if your not invested in this share. its all games to hold the share price back for others to get in or for shorters to play the range. hopefully some day soon when news comes out they'll get burnt

These guys operate in syndicates. As I previously mentioned, they come under the guise of innocent onlookers.

If I don't like a company,I move on and find one I like.Let's face it not many of us are going to spend much,if any time on something we have no financial interest in.

It is always the same themes, director sells, possible dilution, competition etc.

Further positive newsflow is due at any time.

One announcement of a major contract with a tier 1 telco and these will be several pounds higher.

Contracts, not dubious anonymous bb posters are what will drive the shareprice.

Agreed Jimbo

I can't do anything about posters who are paid up "blue" but I will be banning any that are not who have recently appeared with what appears to be purely deramping.

Any are are long time posters who have reasoned argument about AVN being overpriced in their opinion wont be of course. We all welcome good debate and should be encouraged.

I will be filtering and ignoring superg1

I am not a great fan of conspiracy theories - but there is quite clearly an orchestrated bashing campaign under way. The anti-satellite posts are appearing as instant replies almost simultaneously across several bulletin boards.

Skilled bashers are usually subtle - their attacks coming across as well-reasoned negative comment, which wouldn't worry most thread hosts. But the postings this morning are too obvious. Obviously somewhat unskilled bashers ;o)

superg1, thanks for the links. It's always good to read an informed debate. I do have one question for you, however, based on some of your posts on iii:

Why the obsessive interest in this company if, as you stated on iii last week, you have no interest in buying the shares? Why do you continue to post across multiple bulletin boards about it if you've decided not to invest? Personally, if I decide not to invest in a company, the last thing I want to do is take valuable time to post on related bulletin boards.........

There cant be that many people who dont get TV though - possibly a few sheepfarmers? I gather BT are doing a similar trial in Bute and Microsoft and Google are doing trials in rural towns in USA. It seems to be catching on but hard to say how wide-spread it will become at this stage. BT Microsoft and Google would not be involved in it unless it has some prospects of success.
