Associated British Foods making progress, says Jefferies

Jefferies expects Primark owner Associated British Foods (ABF) to make progress on earnings this year.

Analyst James Grzinic retained his ‘hold’ recommendation and £24.50 target price. The shares rose 75p to close 2.9% up at £26.85.

‘We model for ABF’s first quarter update to confirm a return to positive like-for-like at Primark, and a reiteration of guidance for progress in earnings before interest and taxation and earnings per share in 2016/17,’ he said.

‘We expect this to be largely anticipated by investors, and note unhelpful inflections in dollar/euro, freight and cotton costs, and to some extent sugar.’

Although progress was being made, Grzinic said the valuation still remained ‘pretty full’. Last month ABF said its sugar business had benefited from price increases and cost cutting but that its discount clothes chain Primark was suffering margin pressure.

'High Street Christmas sales figures fail to sparkle'

High Street sales fell in December for the fourth year in a row, as shoppers shifted more Christmas shopping online.
Sales were 0.1% lower than in December 2015, according to BDO's High Street Sales Tracker, with consumers spending more on home wares but less on fashion.

Just added another block for the SIPP so no rush for a return to 3200p just yet.

It is crazy that a modest fall in sales at NEXT can trigger falls elsewhere especially when ABF profits are generated by so many diverse businesses around the Globe.

One of the Guardian newspaper tips for 2017..

Associated British Foods

Shares in Associated British Foods have fallen from their 2016 peak, on concerns about a slowdown at its discount retailer Primark and the outlook for its sugar business. But a recent update reassured investors, with Primark’s expansion continuing and sugar recovering as prices move higher and cost-cutting benefits start to take hold. There are concerns about the effects of the weak pound on Primark’s products sourced from abroad but opening 1.3m square feet of new store space next year should still help to fuel growth, although margins are expected to come under pressure. Even so, the shares at £27.45 could have further to rise.
