05/5/2006 12:10 | If I'm reading this right then, the patent ruling in Germany will be in August, with the case in Japan being potentially 7 months down the line from now (2-3 months to file and 5 months for debate/conclusion). But a positive European ruling would push Toyota into seeking settlement to minimise court costs. Strange thing is, I know plenty of women who will let Toyota do a lot more than harass them, and for a damn sight less than $190, let alone $190m :-) | littlebert
05/5/2006 11:28 | My thinking is simply, why defend a £100m+ infringment against a co with a market cap of only £35m.... surely, given any case would drag Toyotas flagship hybrid through the mud, Toyota would be better buying out ATV along with the relevant patents.... Add the upcoming demos involving Gearing equiped Supercharged Ford and Merc cars, and last years ATV/Rotrex demos involving a 1.4 Golf outperforming the 2.0l GTi, and Toyota would be scooping up much more than the outlay in R & D alone..... Anyway, I said I don't hold - that's now changed :-) | littlebert
05/5/2006 11:10 | LittleBert - I think it simply(and ridiculously)the case that ATV is still not being viewed in the present, with all its potential and developments now ripe for commercialisation on a major scale.(I happen to know that a couple of fund managers who THINK they know ATV but are looking way back to the less positive days!) I am certain that we have an extremely undervalued stock here and that it WILL come into the limelight soon. There are massive deals to be done in this market and Toyota is an example of how desperate the big manufacturers are to get their hands on ATV's patented technology. Toyota might be very well advised to buy ATV - or wait for Honda to get in ahead of them!!! I believe that we should be at the £1.50+ level NOW - but I can wait because I believe we will see nearer £2 by the end of the year. | pkw
05/5/2006 07:52 | So, bods, if the case against Toyota looks like a simple low cost defence, and the most likely outcome being Toyota say sorry and bung ATV sizeable compo, and the Rotrex tie-up is going into the 'bolt-on' market in a very soon, followed by the OEM almost immediately after, why aint the share price moving north? Will losses burn the cashpile before the profits reach breakeven point? I don't currently hold, but experience has taught me the market usually (not always) has a reason for not moving. | littlebert
05/5/2006 06:49 | Supercharger Demonstrations RNS Number:4837C Antonov PLC 05 May 2006 Antonov plc ("Antonov") Antonov demonstrates potential of world's first two speed supercharger drive system The world's first two speed supercharger drive system to enter series production will be demonstrated by Antonov, the automotive technology company, at the Engine Expo exhibition at Stuttgart in Germany next week The following week, the racing driver Peter Kox will demonstrate the technology at the Zandvoort race circuit in the Netherlands. While this first commercial application from Antonov's broad range of patented technologies will be demonstrated in two high performance vehicles - a Mercedes and Ford Mustang - the high volume potential for the device lies in its ability to enable engine downsizing, opening up the application of superchargers to mainstream vehicles. Following the European events, the Mustang will be shipped to North America to feature in the Hot Rod Power Tour, which is presented by GM's performance division. The initial release of the device into the buoyant US tuner market exposes the first production units to a tough performance engine environment and, in many instances, aggressive track racing conditions. Commenting on this strategy, Brad Shantry, product development manager of Wheel-to-Wheel Powertrain, Antonov's North American distributor, said: "The forced induction market is unquestionably growing. I feel that a centrifugal supercharger with a step-up drive will quickly become the icon product of the performance industry." John Moore, chief executive of Antonov, said: "Our tactic of selling to the world's largest market for tuner products is strategically important, particularly while we are in discussion with vehicle manufacturers and tier 1 suppliers interested in high volume applications. It shows OEMs that we are confident enough to launch the variable drive into the industry's toughest marketplace to prove this is fully developed and readily available technology. We have experienced strong interest and have already supplied units to OEM clients for assessment and development trials." It holds a broad intellectual property portfolio in mechanical power transmission. Though focused principally on technology for the automotive industry, due to the potential for high product volumes applications in other sectors are also being explored. The Antonov Mechanical Module two speed drive enables a Rotrex centrifugal pump supercharger to be better matched to the engine. By driving the supercharger faster at low engine speeds, higher boost ratio can be obtained to provide additional low speed engine torque. As engine speed rises the unit automatically changes up to enable the supercharger to continue to operate effectively at higher engine speeds. The ability of the mechanism to operate as a passive device without the need for additional external control or hydraulics offers low cost, high efficiency and simplicity of application. The compact Antonov drive system - essentially a tiny automatic gearbox - extends the engine torque curve delivered by a centrifugal pump supercharger. This type of supercharger is in itself more compact, less complex and less expensive than a positive displacement supercharger, but in comparison cannot offer the same torque output at low engine revs. The addition of an Antonov drive system, however, extends the engine torque curve available to exceed even the performance of a positive displacement blower. In addition, the torque curve can be tuned so that a smaller displacement engine matches exactly the performance of a much larger naturally aspirated unit. Antonov anticipates demand for the drive system will come from carmakers needing to downsize engines in pursuit of better fuel efficiency and reduced CO2 emissions. The trouble with smaller displacement engines is the loss of low end torque; hence the need to compensate through forced induction to restore the driveability of the vehicle and its engine performance characteristics. Many industry pundits consider the trend to smaller engines unavoidable in pursuit of improved powertrain efficiency and the ultimate market potential therefore could be as high as 100 million engines annually reflecting global vehicle production forecasts over the next 10 to 20 years. A pure research and development company, Antonov expects to licence the technology to high volume clients either directly or through their Tier 1 suppliers. Antonov can manage the initial manufacture and supply of up to 10,000 units annually through its production supply partner Neue ZWL Zahnradwerk. However the plan is for much lower preliminary sales growing to around 4,000 units over the next three years. Located near Leipzig, Neue ZWL, has a history of 100 years in the manufacture of transmissions and gearbox components. Other Antonov technologies on display at Engine Expo that are available for licensing and high volume production include the compact Antonov 6-speed automatic transmission system for front wheel drive passenger cars. In January this year, Antonov announced an agreement to develop this transmission with Great Wall Motor Company Limited. 27/4/2006 10:34 | It is quite normal I believe that Antonov's costs will be low in the Japanese court case. Antonov are suing Toyota in Europe for use of Antonov's CVT patent in the Toyota Prius. Toyota's position seems to be moving from one of inadvertent use of Antonov's patent to one of criminal intent, as they continue to avoid paying and seek to get the patent invalidated. However, that patent is granted by the patent authorities and not by Antonov PLC. (If it is found that Toyota are using the patent, Toyota are criminals.) Many patent authorities worldwide have granted the patent and Toyota is seeking to argue they have done so mistakenly, particularly in Japan. In Japan, Toyota's argument is with the Japanese patent authorities (claiming the authorities are incompetent for granting the patent) and not with Antonov PLC (who merely applied for it). If Toyota win their case in Japan, then either the patent authorities are incompetent worldwide, or (if Antonov's patent is only invalidated in Japan but not the rest of the world) then it might appear as if Toyota have political influence in Japan, and the Japanese authorities are corrupt. | crystalclear
26/4/2006 04:26 | I guess it is rather silly to talk of a single clutch dual clutch transmission, but that is effectively what Roumen Antonov designed when he created the DCA design with 80% parts common between it and its manual version. Logically, the single clutch version of the transmission (ie the manual) should come to market first. Still, press release 275 seems to make it quite clear that the dual clutch transmission is still in design and so the new manual transmisison is most likely not the Antonov manual with dual shift forks. | crystalclear

12/4/2006 00:01 | Toyota Moves to Become No 1. Car Maker in the World .... However, Toyota is involved in two court battles with Antonov, an engineering firm listed on the London Stock Exchange with a research and development facility in France. Antonov alleges that Toyota's second generation Prius infringes one of its transmission patents. If Toyota loses the battles it could be forced to pay up over $200 million in royalties. .... | crystalclear

31/3/2006 16:11 | Mangal If you have the free ADVFN service and try to read the RNS when ADVFN is busy, then they will send you to a timeout screen after a few seconds, as if the text was streamed, like the live share prices. This makes the text unreadable for many users: presumably not you. A copy paste to a page with no timeout thus makes it readable. I agree with you in principle, that news should be left where it is, for copyright reasons, to ensure people access the original and not a modified version, etc. However a press release is presumably intended to be distributed, and, like putting a copyright string on a computer virus, one does have to ask what useful purpose it really serves. If ADVFN can fix their NEWS service, I would agree that a copy paste of it is counterproductive. Sorry for the aggressive tone to my previous posting - just a bit of self-defence! | crystalclear
