Aldermore and Shawbrook march towards FTSE 250

Aldermore and Shawbrook look set to break into the FTSE 250 just weeks after floating as challenger banks take the fight to their high-street rivals.

On 2 June, the FTSE Group will begin conducting its quarterly review of the 250 index – the 101st to 350th largest companies listed on the stock exchange - to decide which companies should enter and which companies should drop out.

Presently, firms valued at around £775m would be large enough to automatically enter the FTSE 250.

Aldermore, which floated on 13 March, was valued at £846m as at 19 May while Shawbrook, which was valued at £725m when it floated on 8 April, was valued at £815m.

OneSavings Bank has seen its value grow from £413m when it floated last year to £743m as at 19 May. But despite its strong growth, OneSavings is less likely than Aldermore or Shawbrook to enter the FTSE 250 in June, although the price of its shares could increase by the cut off point on 2 June.

Experts says the success of the challenger banks shows competition in mortgage market is increasing, with these smaller lenders providing a stiff challenge to their giant high-street equivalents.

Mortgages for Business finance director Simon Whittaker says: “It means we are getting a better spread [of lenders] and the mortgage market is no longer dependent on purely the monster banks.”

Hargreaves Landsdown senior analyst Laith Khalaf says: “As we know, big banks are now more reluctant and weary to lend money than they were before the financial crisis and I think that has opened the gate for those challenger banks to fill that gap.”

With the situation unlikely to change any time soon, challenger banks feel they will be in demand for the foreseeable future.

Aldermore managing director of mortgages and commercial lending Charles Haresnape says: “There are still a lot of potential housebuyers who still can’t get a mortgage through the big high street lenders even though they are prime customers.

“We remain keen to address that market and see that at as a long-term market we can fulfil, while remaining focussed on prime customers. We see that is where challenger banks can continue to offer added value in the marketplace.”

OneSavings Bank sales and marketing director John Eastgate says: “The current interest from investors and analysts in newly-floated challenger banks is testimony to two main strengths: the first is the demand both now and forecast in the future from customers for products in markets that are underserved by the traditional banks; the second is to the rigour that specialist banks such as OneSavings Bank have brought to their customer propositions, business models and finances led by high quality management.”

Something from Clive Lambert: Late afternoon strength (especially on a Friday), if it carries on, augurs extremely well. It suggests that buyers have still not finished buying.

Let's hope that applies here :-)

A rather nice looking breakout.

PE is irrelevant - all that matters is the MC - and when I last looked the boundary for automatic inclusion in FTSE was £775m. ALD has a MC of £880m and SHAW £930m at present - so way above the borderline.

no, average PE of FTSE 250 is 18 i think
This is on a prospective of 9
So, to match ALD needs to get to target of £5 plus

The market capitalisation cut-off date used in the ranking process to determine rebalance changes at index reviews will be on the Tuesday before the first Friday in March, June, September and December. (Amended entry - they brought forward the date by a week and nobody told me!). So critical date IS 2nd June.

Suspect that this is fully reflected in price now -likewise for SHAW.
