09/5/2004 08:15 | "NTL for 1mb broadband - in a word - useless." - dialup speed or worse. After six months of connecting with them through a set top box and ethernet and having them, so they said, I changed last week to connecting with them through a modem. Even their engineers have siad to me "These set top boxes are useless but they won't admit it." Result - immediate speed up. Connection now very good. | agincourt

06/5/2004 14:29 | I will supposedly get broadband at the end of the year. There is no way I will go with BT because I am not happy with the three year wait to get it. At the moment I pay £20 a month to Demon (+ £25 to BT) for a genuine unlimited ISDN connection and I am very pleased with them. Unless I hear a lot against them I will go with Demon when I eventually get broadband. | optimist
06/5/2004 13:58 | BT Broadband has turned out to be a nightmare. Just want to move house. Indian gentleman advises that I cease on migration. Eventually find out that you have to cancel the account and the day after it becomes effective, you sign up again on-line. However as you are no longer on line, you have to use the phone and it costs an extra £50.00 and you have to sign up for a full year regardless of how long you've been with them. Its taken approx 14 phone calls and twelve G&T's to fathom the system. If you want a cheaper packsge, you have to talk to someone else, if you need a refund on your account you speak to billing who do not "get back to you". All in all I would say avoid. OK so who do i choose now please? | derizzo
06/5/2004 12:42 | Yantra - that NTL phone number would be very useful if you've still got it as I need to cancel my NTL dial-up. I switched to Eclipse for broadband and they've been excellent, they consistently top the ratings in the league tables. Their customer service is very good. | biffer
06/5/2004 11:35 | Just had a look at the adslguide site and did a 'compare' on some of the isp's. Zen very impressive. Pipex came out well too, but zen stands out. | wolf
06/5/2004 10:44 | >march thanks the only thing that keeps me with aol is my whole address book is held online and its impossible to export and my email address is a good one | dodddy
06/5/2004 10:32 | >dodddy -I strongly recommend Zen internet. 6 months on, very fast and problem free (apart from 1 short outage that was down to BT). Also there is no 12 months minimum contract - just pay month by month | march
06/5/2004 10:20 | i had 4 years on aol isdn with no problems at all. i have had aol broadband for 8 months now and have had continuos problems. wish i had stayed on isdn cos my broadband is not that much faster | dodddy
06/5/2004 10:20 | I have noticed at times that ADVFN won't load but I put that down to connection glitch's. When it does load 99% of the time everything is crisp and runs well. I do notice the speed at which things download using 2 meg and wonder how i survived before. The only advantage I believe AOL has is the user base. Don't expect things to run smoothly or it to be compatible with everything you use. Regards Andy | renda2
06/5/2004 10:11 | Thanks Ms Wolf - good site that one. | yantraman
06/5/2004 09:57 | For advfn use I don't think it will make any difference which package you go for. There is no heavy graphics etc to download & you'll be able to run as many windows as you like. I use pipex - only had a couple of problems with them & very happy. go and look at the asdlguide.org.uk site | wolf
06/5/2004 09:33 | I use BT Broadband 2meg for my business and they claim it should be able to cope with up to 20 concurrent users with no perceptable lag of course i've never tested it. But delays on opening windows and sites often now relate to how heavy the useage is on the site your trying to access. Anyway good luck. regards Andy | renda2
06/5/2004 09:21 | Not sure about the streaming but all I ever hear about AOL is bad news. I've had NTL for a month and it worked fine now that I have connected it via ethernet, it didn't work properly via USB. My 2p worth. Cheers, HJS. | mr homer j simpson
06/5/2004 09:03 | Yipee Broadband hits my area on 19 May. After trading for literally years on dial up I am now hoping to access more info simuletaneously (spelling??!!). Could someone give me some idea on how many ADVFN streaming windows I can expect to open simultaneously on: A) a 512 download service B) a 1mb download service This will make sure I choose the right package (probably AOL) Thanks | yantraman
