Scottish independence good for economy - Gilbert 12/09/14

SCOTLAND VOTES NO 19/09/14
Scotland has voted against becoming an independent country by a projected 55% to 45%.

19/09/14
Aberdeen Asset Management chief executive Martin Gilbert has called on both sides of the independence debate to come together and 'move forward united'.

Following the news that Scotland voted in favour of staying within the UK, the chief executive of the Scotland-based asset manager said: 'The campaigning is over and UK investors will welcome a reduction in the uncertainty of recent months. Tomorrow attention will turn again to the situation in Ukraine, the conflict in the middle east and the fragile European economy.

Gilbert (pictured) added: 'Both sides of the independence debate now need to come together so that from today, Scotland moves forward united. Scotland has long been a world leader in business sectors such as oil and gas, whisky and investment and the task now is to grow the rest of the economy with the strong support of politicians of all parties.

'As I’ve said before, whatever the outcome of the referendum, Scotland can have a prosperous future.'

Aberdeen Asset Management's SWIP acquisition takes Deal of the Year award
Aberdeen Asset Management’s £550m acquisition of Scottish Widows Investment Partnership (SWIP) from Lloyds won the prestigious Deal of the Year award at this year’s Scottish Business Insider Deals & Dealmakers awards.

The judges for the awards said the deal “wasn’t just an acquisition for a big cheque, this was a really creative deal with longevity in mind.

They also highlighted the importance of the deal, which also won the Acquisition of the Year category, to the wider Scottish business community.

“It is so important that we have big Scottish companies alive and kicking. Aberdeen Asset Management is a leading light for Scotland across the world,” they said.

Having said all of the above, the fly in the ointment now appears to be the Scottish referendum. I've covered my long position with a trading short in IG this morning. If things work out ok, I'll add more shares after the vote, but fear the waters could get choppy the next 10 days or so.

Hi rathlindri. Yeah, despite my initial concerns, looks like I got the timing right for once on this one! Its up over 10% now, but I'm primarily an income/value investor, so will be holding on (and adding again on any weakness), as it offers good potential for earnings & dividend growth imho.

Yes good idea huttonr.
I originally bought in at 450p and topped up when they fell to 387p. Will do the same if the fall continues ( and we are in holiday season so quite possible).
If the analysts are half right and the earnings grow to 39p next yr then you should see some good growth. One of my biggest holdings now so hope so.

As I said two days ago 'drop seems somewhat overdone' - we are now down some 50p ie 10%. This really is a bit excessive, especially as the Far East has come back very well over the past few months.
Perhaps when we reach 400p, I should start buying again?

This year is likely to one of consolidation for Aberdeen with consensus brokers' forecasts indicating a fall in eps. The Scottish referendum vote is also likely to cause uncertainty. I like the company but, absent any pronounced weakness, I can't see that there is any hurry to top up.

Next stop 500. When the CEO says savings will be greater than planned and he looks forward to buybacks you know the future is bright - now one of my biggest holdings - stock is up 600% in 10 years . It's a clear Buffett-esque company - leader in its field ,high margins meaning large moat ,v high returns on equity ,v high free cashflows.
One to buy and hold

Prospects look promising for shareholders, future dividend increase of approx. 15% and stock buy back from the cost savings of the SWIP takeover, should now start to see a run up to the £5 end of year target.

Fund manager Aberdeen Asset Management (AAM) expects greater-than-forecast savings from its recent Scottish Widows Partnership Group (Swip) acquisition.

The Granite City-based firm also anticipates raising its dividend this year and sees scope for buying back shares, ichief executive Martin Gilbert said yesterday.

AAM bought Swip and related private equity and infrastructure fund management businesses from Lloyds Banking Group late last year in a deal worth about £550million.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Fund Forum conference in Monaco, Mr Gilbert said the integration was going well and the group was focused on "the hard bit" around front-office integration, which should be finished in the next two to three weeks.

He said cost savings from the deal were likely to exceed the previously expected total of between £48million and £50million, although he declined to comment further.

Mr Gilbert reiterated a plan to increase the dividend and buy back shares.

"We'd really like to see the dividend increasing and then buying back shares after that," he said.

With analysts predicting a flat year for earnings, Mr Gilbert said he would still look to increase the dividend and broker estimates for an increase of between 10% and 15% were "not unreasonable".

In the year to September 30, 2013, AAM increased its dividend by 39% to 16p. The 2014 half-year payout was up 12.5% to 6.75p.

I think we can safely say we have breakout now...could well move rapidly to 500p from here. We're still in a longer-term range from last Spring of course, i.e. 350 / 500. So if we move strongly beyond 500p, then as this thread title suggests the sky's the limit. Will be tempted to lock in some profits at 500p though, as I expect strong resistance.
