On Remembrance day - could this be the Last Post.

A very strong finish to a troubled life.

thanks inki - presumably won't matter as all i have is the 100 free shares on demutualisation; which means, i guess, that the primary consideration will be what view we take on where santander's shares are headed and also the exchange rate movement?

Well I've decided to hold and see how it goes. The ANL shareprice has risen significantly recently and there is also the 31p dividend.

what's the view of people here - better to hold, get the special divi and sell the Santander shares or to forego the divi and sell ANL shares?

The '15 September 2004.PDF' document at the above link gives details.

My shares are in a PEP so presumably the tax etc is dealt with by the nominee and I won't need to deal with filling in Spanish forms. The same would hold with any nominee holdings.

Thanks pvb,

I can't really help. Your brokers seem correct to me; certificated shares are usually on T+10, and that takes us to 5+10 = Monday 15 Nov. ANL shares are withdrawn on Friday 12 Nov. Monday sees the issue of new Banco Santander shares.

However, if you hang on till after Friday 12 November you will get the special dividend of 31p on Tuesday 14 December. You can sell the Santander shares when you receive them.

My understanding is ANL shares are withdrawn from CREST on Friday 12 November,
new Banco Santander shares issued on Monday 15 November. You get the special dividend of 25p + 6p = 31p on Tuesday 14 December. The ordinary ANL interim dividend of 8.33p was paid on Monday 4 October.

I only hold the shares in a PEP (ie a nominee account) so I assume the tax is handled by the nominee. I don't know the details.

Is my understanding of the following correct? If you hold these shares past 12th November, you'll be entitled to a special dividend around 30p. But, on selling after that date, I suppose after they convert to BSCH, you have to pay a Spanish tax of about 35% ?

It doesn't. The div is paid as part of the takeover which happens c. mid Nov (12th or 13th I think).

impecunious -- agree and despite the Press negativity towards Santander, their share price has risen 400% over the last six years I beleive.
Slightly better record than Abbey's - hope they can maintain it.
