With the increase over recent weeks/months I'm at around my target price...that said, I'd appreciate any opinions/views about what the impending gov sell off will have on share price short/medium term. If the gov. are gonna sell at a discount won't the share price just drop to that level....if so why doesn't everyone who currently has shares sell now and buy back when the sell off happens. As a novice investor I'd appreciate any comments

Historically I recon 10 ish over here. Basically if the FTSE/UK wasn't a basket case, the likes of Lloyds/Natwest would probably have share prices nearly double where they are now. Maybe Labour can turn the sinking UK ship around. Lol.

The first buyback has completed, as per the RNS:

The Company announces that following the purchase of these shares, the Transaction 1 share buyback programme announced on 31 July 2023 has completed. Since the commencement of this buyback programme, the Company has repurchased for cancellation 227,760,624 Ordinary Shares at a volume weighted average price of 217.1788 pence per Ordinary Share for a total consideration of £494,647,875.28.

Considering where the share price is these days, the weighted average price is pretty good.

If sell 10% of the co. = ~£2bn

If 5m ppl take part, equally, that is just £400/person.

-----

If HMG sell 20% of the co. shares that is ~£4bn.
If 5m ppl take part, equally, that is £800/person.

-----
Let us say the placing takes place at 220p. Small discount to the mkt price of 230p.

-----

A) If one already holds say £5k & the share price rises 10% due to HMG moving from being the controlling shareholder to being a non-controlling shareholder,. 230p to 252p. The gain is £500.
A return of 10%.

B) While the gain on buying £800 of shares in the placing is ((252-220)/220p)X £800 =£116.
A return of 14.5%.

-----

Conclusion
These 2 calculations with assumptions show that owning £5k of shares gives the higher total return. While just taking part in the placing gives the higher % return....but !!! producing a small amount of money that for many PIs is not worth the effort of filling in the forms ! (If one has to fill in paper forms rather than just click on a box at one's broker's website).

Another TR-1, this time after just a week. I think we've all seen the impact their selling is having as HMT takes advantage of rises in the share price from time to time.

I don't really understand why folk are buying NWG - up to 232.60 this morning - when a discounted Retail Offer may well be announced next week. It takes all sorts....

UK Government Asks City Firms for NatWest Share Sale Proposals
Treasury expected to issue update alongside Budget in March
Government considering discounted sale to the public

No wonder the share price can't get past the low 220s.

And bound to have a negative effect on UK domestic bank share prices as institutions take money out to put money in here?

...as an investor in the banking sector

I expect banks to reduce the % paid on new 1 & 2 yr deposits....or to just stop offerring them completely !!

Due to the risk of losing money on them if the daily % rate falls during the 1 yr & 2 yr periods.

If banks were to do that then it should help share prices in the banking sector. ;-)

=======

Ah, and of course, if the interest rate paid on 1 yr & 2 yr deposits falls (& the % paid on gilts also falls) then equities become a bit more attractive to investors relative to gilts. If supply/demand changes then share prices change. (NAT West shares rose ~5p today, without blinking).

Nat West shares were ~300p last year, with the 9 month profit of £2.3 bln, versus £3.3 bln this yr. My guess is that the NWG share price will rise.

Always great to note the “Director Purchases” RNS here today afternoon, nice, and GLA!

Over the last three years on average, NatWest’s EPS has increased by 70% per year. But its share price has only increased by an average 11% per year over that period.

The bank looks significantly undervalued to its peers on the key metric of the price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.

NatWest’s is just 3.5, while Barclays’ is 3.6, Lloyds’ is 3.9, HSBC Holdings’ is 5.9, and Standard Chartered’s is 10.8. This gives a UK bank peer group average of 6.05.

It looks even more undervalued against the European bank peer group P/E average of 7.7.

To gauge the level of undervaluation, I use the discounted cash flow (DCF) method, using several analysts’ DCF valuations as well as my own.

The core assessments for NatWest are now between around 72% and 78% undervalued. The lowest of these would give a fair value per share of about £6.50 per share, compared to £1.82 now.

In 2022, NatWest paid a Special Dividend of 16.8p, which gives a yield of 17% based on the current share price. Crucially though, even if this Special Dividend is not included in the calculation, the yield is still 7.4%.

So, a £10,000 investment would make another £7,400 in passive income over 10 years if the yield and the share price stayed the same (which is not guaranteed). This is over and above share price gains or losses and tax obligations incurred.

NatWest increased its 2023 interim payment by 57% — from 3.5p to 5.5p. If this was applied to this year’s final dividend, then the total would be 21.2p. This would give an 11.6% yield, with no Special Dividend included, based on the current share price.

..I disagree about where you think the share price headed, you said ~150p

...the numbers will always get you in the end

too cheap imo
..while the weak FTSE & weak USA mkts does not help the NWG share price
