I suspect that the problem has been a lack of guidance from UMC.

As far as I know they have made no major presentations to analysys since the divestment of Pattonair. I don't know what the management think about the detailed profitability & prospects of the refocussed business - and believe that the same holds for most investors (private & institutional).

UMC have only made 1 small (but very good) acquisition with their strengthened balance sheet & I believe that everyone expected more activity than that.

I've been adding at the very depressed prices of the last few weeks in the expectation that a refocussed & expansive composites business must be a very valuable prospect. Let's hope that we see a more City savvy communications policy from UMC management & a re-rating soon.

I suppose we have to wait for interims for some form of news?
It certainly is dropping fairly fast.
Not many on here nowadays, sale of Pattonair gave us a lot of money, but the share price is just not responding at the moment.

UMC have doubled in the last 6 months its not suprising therefore that some profits are being plucked.

geraklus...I would like to think that UMC can pickup some nice parts of AI. which is in administration. Bought in today because I see this as a very good long term play.

Agreed--thats why I only bought back a small part of my holding at 221p

I don't lay much store by what brokers say, but, the following might help.

Umeco returned to buy from hold at Altium, target price rising to 260p from 230p
Business Financial Newswire
Broker reduced recommendation to hold yesterday (July 29) but share price fall now places it back into buy territory.

'It is our view that FY 2010E will constitute the low point in terms of profitability. On that basis, the current rating of 5.5x and 5.7x trough EBITDA and earnings respectively is too low for a company of this calibre.'

Shares opened up 3.25p at 207p.

sleveen,

Thanks for your reply. I will continue my lurking. However won't let it get away like my planned purchase of Laird which I missed at 70p. Which you appear to hold. Well done.

I am currently buying undervalued small caps for the long-term (and trading overvalued blue chips)and feel that UMC once it addresses its covenant issues, will be snapped up by a stronger and larger competitor. As they are probably hoping to get UMC assets by way of a firesale at the current share price or better still if covenants are breached. I for one do not believe UMC will breach its covenants.

Just my humble opinion.
Yours with integrity c2i
