V-Charge Smart Project Update

The Innovate UK (previously Technology Strategy Board) backed Smart Project ("the Project") to develop an application specific, production oriented version of Torotrak's V-Charge technology is progressing to plan. Torotrak has been working closely with the University of Bath during the initial simulation phase of the Project and can now announce the participation of Ford Motor Company ("Ford"), which is working with Torotrak to evaluate the potential benefits of V-Charge technology in engine downsizing.

The simulation results produced by the University of Bath Powertrain & Vehicle Research Centre using Ford supplied engine models will be used to understand the potential of V-Charge technology to improve fuel consumption or performance, compared to incumbent boosting solutions. The next stage of the project is to validate the simulation predictions on a downsized gasoline engine. The addition of V-Charge targets significant increases in power and low speed torque enabling fitment of this small capacity unit into a wider range of vehicles, to replace larger engines.

Joint evaluation with Ford engineers from research and advanced engineering centres in Aachen, Germany and Dunton, UK is continuing. V-Charge technology will be assessed against competitor supercharger technology and a wide range of attributes will be evaluated to understand the benefits that V-Charge could provide.

"To realise the full potential of V-Charge technology always demanded a system design approach, to allow accurate assessment of performance and fuel consumption," explains Torotrak's programme manager, Andrew De Freitas. "The follow-on hardware verification and engine calibration activities allow adjustment of all parameters to match the modelling output - essential to realise targeted benefits."

Notes to editors

Torotrak is a leading developer and supplier of variable drive transmission, engine boosting and kinetic energy recovery systems for vehicles. Our portfolio of technology solutions substantially improves fuel economy and reduces CO(2) emissions in vehicles through harnessing the power of supercharging to enable engine downsizing, capturing and recycling energy that would otherwise be lost and managing the engine at the optimum point.
