The Bank of England remains on course to begin slowly raising interest rates early next year despite the recent turmoil in global financial markets, Gov. Mark Carney said on Saturday.

In a speech at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City's annual economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo., Mr. Carney said the decision on when to start raising interest rates from near zero will become clearer around the turn of the year.

"Recent events do not yet, to my mind, merit changing the MPC's strategy for returning inflation to target," Mr. Carney said, referring to the BOE's rate-setting Monetary Policy Committee.
