Banks and lenders rose as traders bet Wall Street desks would be beneficiaries of a lift to stock and bond markets worldwide provided by the Bank of Japan's stimulus. Barclays and other British banks rose after the Bank of England proposed a smaller-than-expected increase in U.K. bank capital requirements.

CME Group rose after the Chicago exchange operator posted an increase in quarterly earnings after volatile markets had lifted its trading volumes.
