SAO PAULO--Brazilian shares closed lower Tuesday, led by power company Energias de Brasil, and the real weakened against the dollar.
The benchmark Ibovespa stocks index closed 1% lower at 57118 points. The real exited active trading at 2.2313 to the dollar, according to Tullett Prebon via FactSet, compared with 2.2254 to the dollar at the close Monday.
Energias do Brasil was the biggest decliner in the Ibovespa, falling 5.1% to 10.68 reais. Mobile phone company Oi had the biggest rise, advancing 4.1% to 1.52 reais.
Other Brazilian blue-chips closed mostly lower.
Iron miner Vale, the most heavily weighted company in the Ibovespa, fell 0.03% to 29.35 reais and oil company Petrobras, the second-most heavily weighted, fell 2.6% to 19.62 reais. Plane maker Embraer fell 1.2% to 21.44 reais.
Banks were among the few shares that had a good day, with Itau climbing 0.5% to 35.67 reais and Bradesco gaining 0.4% to 35.09 reais.
