Definition of Cost Of Sales

Also called Cost of Goods Sold (COGS). It is calculated by taking the initial inventory that exists at the beginning of the accounting year adding purchased goods for sale, and deducting the ending stock. COGS includes all the costs incurred when obtaining and manufacturing products.
