Opportunities in Zimbabwe

It is probably early... BUT MAYBE NOT TOO EARLY

If Robert Mugabe could be persuaded to leave the office of the Presidency sometime within 2005, we might see a rush of investors to get back into the country.

Stocks are still cheap (in foreign currencies)... What should we be looking at?

There has been tremendous excitement on the stock market since January this year, with the industrial and mining indices breaking record territories (see graph).

The question that comes to mind, given the rate at which the equity market has been surging forward, is: is the surge sustainable?

The key industrial index went up by 90 percent to close at 2 084 386.37 on Tuesday, from January 3 2005, while the mining index has gone up by 114 percent, closing at 429 930.72.

The disparity between investment interest rates and the inflation rate has sent investors running for cover into the safe haven of the stock market.
