Aldi to overtake Morrisons as UK’s fourth largest supermarket

Cost of living crisis forces shoppers to switch grocery shops

Aldi is on track to overtake Morrisons as the country’s fourth biggest supermarket within weeks, buoyed by the cost of living crisis.

The German discounter increased its market share to 9.1pc in the three months to Aug 7, from 8.2pc a year ago, while Morrisons dropped from 10pc to 9.3pc, according to the latest figures from Kantar.

“In very short order we’ll be talking about a new Big Four: Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Aldi,” said Clive Black, a retail analyst at Shore Capital. “I think in the next one or two months, and there's no going back for a while.”

Aldi and fellow German discounter Lidl have been boosted by “unnatural footfall,” Mr Black said, as the cost of living crisis prompts many shoppers “who ordinarily would not be striving for deep value” to switch between grocery shops to keep costs down.

Remember when no major sales of assets were promised.

An escape from the ultra competitive grocery sector in the 280s now looks a gift. One wonders if rivals (ie SBRY) artificially buoyed by the bid process here may return to similar pre-bid valuations.

leadersoffice - Many thanks for your helpful reply. Neighbour is 86 yrs of age and is really very grateful for the reassurance. Fortunately, certificates are in her name and I have validated they are properly registered with equinitic. Not able to speak with them - they only take email!

She'll just be paid out. If she is the registered holder then the cheque will be made out to her. If it's still in husbands name ... she'll need to contact the company's registrars. Reassure her she'll be laid out. I'm not a small mount in certificated form from 2004. Same will happen there and I hold the rest in nominee. Where to invest the money.... That's the question. Could do with putting it in sone good company that pays a good dividend. Good luck

An elderly widow neighbour holds about 2000 Morrisons shares in paper form - came to me this morning asking what to do? Any idea as to how she will be able to realise value of around £5K which is a lot of money for her? She found them in a box with a number of Sainsbury shares only when seeing an item of the news and recalling her late husband purchased them many years ago.

Hi albert3591,

Yes, of course you are correct. More sale and leasebacks are bound to happen. It is really just a continuation of what Morrisons has already been doing, but I would expect the number of such deals to increase over time.

Looks like I am indeed factually incorrect, at least according to the Guardian who say the positive majority requirement referred to the number of shareholders not the number of shares which I find odd. I'm still disgruntled.
