I went to Kazantip this summer, totally mind blowing, awesome, totally chilled out. I cried when I had to leave. A lot on the web rubbishes this place but accept there are some sad souls that tell lies and just go there and see for yourself. This place is not just a festival but a Republic, in other words you have to buy a visa, the borders are policed by armed guards and the Ukrainian militia do not enter. The full visa this year cost around £130 a single entry pass around £65. Once you are in Kazantip you can do pretty much as you want, make love in the sea or on the beach, you will not be alone!
The majority of people at Kazantip are Russian and Ukrainian they are very civilized and orderly they drink- sambuka, beer and what passes for Champagne (Russian fizzy stuff). In all my time there I did not see one fight, or rough horseplay. The majority of people there do not like the British, I do not know if this is political or just that these wealthier Russians and Ukrainians have seen too much of us on holiday in the past.
The music (300 djs this year) is wonderfull as are the light systems, lasers, flame throwers and microlights. I only saw three other brits to talk too in the middle of the afternoon, their comment was that it was "like Glastonbury on acid" however I saw little sign of drugs, you do not need them there.
Hopefully some of the attitudes and mindset of Kazantip will find it's way back to Moscow and the politicians and business people of tomorrow there will be better people for it.
It is sobering that there is nothing like this place in the western world, however we have to accept that the supremacy of the west over the east is dwindling. Today the chinese economy is 60% the size of the US and growing far faster, and yet still western econmists talk about the chinese economy having problems. The truth is China has been the best managed large economy in the world now for several years.
Today it is possible that Russia and Ukraine will merge and that Iran and Turkey will grow closer to one another, neither are what "we" want.
I have had great difficulty putting this thread together it feels like someone has been buggering around. Cut and Pastes not working, deletions occuring for no reason, some good material has been lost.

The Constitution of the Kazantip Republic.

Hopefully the policing of Kazantip remains in the hands of the men in fancy dress below (wearing militia uniforms).

Hopefully the policing of Kazantip never becomes like that below.

So where is Kazantip. Kazantip is in the Republic of the Ukraine, to be more precise it is on the coast of the autonomous Republic of the Crimea, this is a bit like Wales having it's own parliment overseen by Kiev. Crimea is very musch in the Russified part of Ukraine the original majority population being Tartars many of which were deported or killed off by Stalin, he replaced them with russians. So when in Crimea the language is Russian and if you try to pull girls in Kazantip I would suggest you learn it first. For what it is worth Kazantip is about 30kms west along the coast from Yevpatoria, I walked and with luggage it took all night, when I arrived I took a bathin the sea. Avoid the giant black grass hoppers that do not die when you tread on them! Also avoid military radar stations!

KaZantip or ORANGE PARADISE

By Olivia Molis
Published: 1st August 05

Imagine a long stretch of sandy beach framing a blue infinite water surface and not a soul around... Such was the territory of the present crazy open-air and “independent republic” of KaZantip when its organizers saw it for the first time. They wanted to share their discovery with others and “created” a city on the sand. Now young merry people from different countries, the hunters of happiness gather on the amazingly beautiful Black Sea coast. They believe, that the impossible is possible, that dreams come true and people can fly.

This summer the 13th rally of “KaZantip nation”, started on 16th July, and continues till 20th August. The most interesting, fantastic public: musicians, artists, photographers, DJs, sportsmen, journalists and young people, looking for freedom, fun and self-expression, filled the golden beaches near the small Popovka village, close to Evpatoriya city, in the Crimea, Ukraine.
What is KaZantip? “It is the copulation of day and night, Russian-Ukrainian Amsterdam and Ibiza, state of freedom and the possibility to see paradise. It is the fifth season of the year and the new country of the Orange Republic. It’s a reflection•of a dawn on the shoulder of a girl appearing from the sea accompanied by “Monsoon” music...”
It’s a country without borders but with its own President and Government. This is a fable and a real place for a great holiday. KaZantip is a sea of emotions, a 24 hour beach-party with the pressure of hundreds of kilowatts of sound and light equipment, filling everyone and everything with energy. It is love on the beach, the best Crimean wine, and an overnight stay in the open air. Loose your mind, find new friends, feel the frenzy of an endless drive! For those who survive the marathon, KaZantip will stay forever a sweet, vivid recollection...
This year 10 dance platforms, accommodating more than 20 thousand people, are on the territory of the Republic. A fantastic influx of foreigners is expected in connection with the coming of KaZantip’s integration into the European Union. The national politics of this summer is to teach people to fly! To rise in the sky you need just ten to twelve hours. Taking from the Hawaiian experience of using kites to lift off, the Crimea will become a kite airspace for the people of the Republic.
KaZantip is an incurable illness which will stay with you forever.

KaZantip History
The history of the movement started mostly in 1995 and the first large scaled event, organized by the leader of the KaZantip citizens, Nikita Marshunok, the present permanent President of the Republic, took place in 1998 under the motto “The main project of the summer!”. Before the primary place of this open-air was Shchelkino settlement on the Azov Sea coast on the KaZantip Cape, which gave the name for the Festival. At that time thousands of young people gathered on the territory of the reactor of the unfinished Nuclear Power Plant. These three successful “Nuclear Projects” in 1995, 96, 97 made KaZantip a super-cult.
1984 – 2 people (Nikita and Kiril)
1993-1999 Shchelkino settlement, 400 people (First Windsurfing RFA Cup), next year -1,000 people (1st night on Nuclear Reactor), then 8,000 people, music everywhere. The festival became one of the best summer openairs.
2000 - Vesyoloe settlement, Black Sea, participants of movement in gasmasks, grandiose scene in the form of spaceship.
2001-2003 Mirny city, Black Sea, iron curtain, visa from $10 to $30.
2003 - KaZantip is proclaimed a Republic! Official President and citizens!
2004 Parliament... voting... Republic is flourishing!

Some Tips from the Constitution of the Orange Republic
KaZanti p Republic is a unique country which is not marked on any world map. It moves in time and space according to the President’s will, and he takes it to where it is best to be for its population. KaZantip Republic is a state with the highest density of happy population per square meter. The indigenous population of KaZantip are lighthearted and suntanned lazybones. Moreover Kazanip people are annualy replenished with huge multinational army of immigrants who are looking for happiness.
The easiest way to get to its territory is to buy a visa on the border of the country. The procedure will take just 1 minute. The government showed its wisdom and stopped visa price at 300 Grivnas (about 49 Euro).
Belief in wonders is a national religion of the great nation of KaZantip. Owing to this firm and sometimes even fanatical belief, everything becomes possible in this Republic! To learn more about the religions, dogmas, attributes, Saints and fetishes of KaZantip go to the website of the Orange Republic.
On the territory of the Republic, love is greeted in all its shows, except sex debauchery. The Institute of the “Fast Married” legalizes the relations. All sweethearts can enter into a fast marriage, carried out at Dawn without witnesses and unrealizable promises. The number of heavenly unions is unlimited (Clause 14 of the Constitution of KaZantip Republic).
To understand better what is this mythical and at the same time real state, KaZantip, you can check its official website www.KaZantipa.net, or better yet, come to Popovka and see it with your own eyes. Sea water procedures, night sound-therapy, ultra-light radiation treatment, flights in reality are what you need this summer. So don’t wait and GO TO KAZANTIP!

Cut and paste of something I posted on another thread.
A year or two back I was prattling on about the big switch from the western to eastern economies. Recent news is becomming increasingly interesting, China has now overtaken Japan as the worlds second largest economy, it is now around 60% of the size of the US. Still there are idiots out there who bury their heads in the sand saying that China is facing severe economic problems. The reality is that China continues to grow and the growth rate has trended up rather than down over the last few years, of the worlds larger economies China has by far, been the best managed, but still western analsts think they know best.
It is interesting to look at the position of the UK in the world ranking now overtaken by Brazil and India, Russia has overtaken France and is very very close to us such that by next year they will probably have overtaken us. Russia is becomming interesting, in Europe 56m people speak English as their second language, 129m people speak Russian as their second language. It is interesting to note that the IMF has now resumed large loans to the Ukraine after a large Russian commercial bank started to loan the Ukrainians large ($bln) amounts of money. Ukraine now has a government that states it'self as being non alligned what this in reality means is that it is no longer interested in joining NATO, and EU membership is on the back burner. In addition to this, relations with Russia have thawed. The reason for this is the change in government the orange government under Yushenko and Timoshenko is no more. I have just come back from Ukraine, the first visit for a few years, my conclusions are the following, The orange revolution brought no obvious benefit to the country, the soviet infrastructure continues to crumble (kerb stones, roads, bridges, tram lines, apartment blocks) this infrastructure is now long past it's renewal date but little has been done. Politically the country has not changed, it was a police state and highly corrupt under Kuchma was also under the orange government and still is under Yanukovitch. In the meantime the Russians continue to buy up and expand their interest in the iron and steel sector. For what it is worth Yushenko the darling of the west inspite of his clor acne poisoning is now a totally busted flush politically, about 3% in opinion polls.
So what of all this? The point I am trying to make in a roundabout way is that Russian interests are now very much in the assendant, if they take over Ukraine then throughout Europe they will become a force to be reconed with.
During my trip to Ukraine I went to Kazantip, this is a very large music festival, but much much more. Kazantip is the republic of Kazantip with it's own armed border guard own visaing and own rules (those of Ukraine do not operate within it's borders and the Ukrainian militia do not operate within it's borders though I believe there is a malign SBU presence). So what does Kazantip believe in? Liberty and freedom, this is particularly reguarding sexual freedom.
So why is Kazantip important? Because a very sizable proportion of rich Russian and Ukrainian young people go there. Kazantip is expensive (the full visa £130) bottles of Russian fizzy white wine around £5 a bottle, this is a playground of the seriously rich. So why is it important? Because the ideas that people get there will return to Moscow, St Petersburg, Odessa and Kiev. Kazantip has the potential over the long term to change the attitudes of the Russian and Ukainian upper class, in my view for the better.
Kazantip may seem like a mickey mouse republic however Transnistria, South Ossetia, Abhazia and Nagorno Karabak are certainly not. The Germans under Angela Merkel are trying to get the Russians to stop supporting these so called frozen conflicts. In reality the EU and US do not approve of small independent nation states and want to snuff them out. I hope they do not suceed ( this is not to say that I approve of everything that goes on in these countries).

The question is why do the Russians that I met at Kazantip dislike the British, firstly I will look at the British and then at Russia and the Russian part of Ukraine.

It is interesting to contrast the culture that I experienced at Kazantip with British culture and since Hector has raised it in the posts, Russian culture generally (he's met some "right ignorant ones" so he says).
So Kazantip caters for people who like Techno music, who like the seaside, are comfortable with free love, and have sufficient money to be able to get there and pay for the visa (£140 for this years visa). Of the people I spoke to the shortest distance travelled was from Kiev (300+ miles). Most of the people there are younger, typically late university age however there are a substancial number of older people. Nikita the president is over 40 and he was there partying with all his friends. Nikita is claimed to be the person that started Kazantip, however it originated as a group meeting on the beach (elsewhere not at Popovka) and having after surfing parties, when Techno came along in the nineties it took off. For some time it was held in the machinery room of a never commissioned nuclear power station.
So back to the question of culture, firstly British people know that the British have a bad name; it is worthwhile considering what this bad name is based on, how it manifests itself and what other cultures think of us.
A few years ago I had the pleasure of talking with a lady who was originally from Tenerife she was actually in Manchester to attend the Labour party conference, anyway we ended up talking until three in the morning. The main topic of the conversation was British culture and what had gone wrong with it. She was able to describe how the British behave in Tenerife and how that behavior effects the native population. So the British broadly speaking holiday in Tenerife as part of a package, the majority of these packages use hotels in an area known as Las Americas, double bookings of the same accomadation are common. The object of the Tenerife authorities is to keep the British as far as possible penned up in the area of Las Americas, they try to keep the British on their sections of beach and try to stop them straying out into the areas of beach used by other nationalities. The hotels employ labour as chambermaids cooks and so on, warnings are stated on the job adverts that you will be working in the British sector.
One night a British girl got drunk, collapsed in the street, then unknown to her seven British blokes has sex with her during the course of the evening.
Rannolph Feinnes makes some brief comments about British men in his autobiography "Mad bad and dangerous to know". The first comment is that British male culture is one of point scoring one upmanship. The second point he makes is that while an officer in the Greys (The Royal Scotts Greys the last Scottish Cavalry Regiment) his men would of an evening sit round a camp fire drinking cans of beer in quantity, then once well drunk, first one man would stand up walk forward and piss in the camp fire to be followed in turn by the rest of the men. Rannolph comments that he got to love his time in the Greys and his men. He also states further on in the book that his best experiences with his men were when he was fighting in Dhofar against the communist Adoo (Dhofar Rebels), the men under his command in Dhofar were Muslims and he got very close to his men, out there alcohol was not present.
A few years ago a newspaper paid a woman (who must naturally have been a bit butch) to dress up and change her appearence so that she would pass as a man and to live life as such. Anyway she did this and her experiences proved interesting, she successfully deceived all the men around her and was taken for a man. Her conclusions were that men were normally very nasty to one another amongst themselves, all men know that the behavoior of men changes when there is a girl or woman present. Anyway this took place in Britian.

So on to the second question that of looking at Russia and its current political culture to try to find why Russians say they dislike the British. Russia today is not what we British call a democracy and the Russians dislike us for telling them this. The reality is that they now have an alternative view of what is desirable in the way things should be. For them their country was not free, they as individuals were not free. Now for them there perception is of a country that is free. They can travel internally within the country, they can obtain a foreign passport and travel outside the country. They can obtain a job whereever they want or open a business whereever they want all of which 30 years ago could have resulted at least in imprisonment.
Ah but the west will say what about elections, free political parties, free candidate selection, a free media, TV newspapers and the like. what about freedom to protest against the government.
So will reply the Russian, we need a strong government protest against that government is unpatriotic, we need to support the strong within our society, we need to serve the interests of our country and not the interests of foreigners.
