Rolls-Royce's involvement in Airbus's A380 programme could be in jeopardy as the result of a legal counter-blow from rival engine maker Pratt & Whitney.

The British engineering giant is being sued by its US rival in the A380 programme over claims the Trent engine used in the super-jumbo is based on Pratt & Whitney's design for a swept-fan blade.

The news adds to Rolls-Royce's problems after more than £1bn was wiped off its share value in the wake of Qantas's A380 incident on Thursday, when one of a super-jumbo's four engines appeared to blow up mid-air. If successful, the counter-suit – Rolls-Royce has already filed a suit against Pratt & Whitney in the US – could seriously damage the British company's role not only in the A380 programme but also Boeing's 787 series roll-out.

Pratt & Whitney, in a lawsuit filed in the High Court in London, claims the Trent 900 and Trent 1000 engines are based on its own patent for the fan blade. The complaint has also been filed with the International Trade Commission in Washington.

In May, Rolls-Royce filed a complaint against Pratt & Whitney, claiming its fan infringed its own patents. Their patent spat dates back almost a decade, but this is thought to be the first time the US company has attempted to file a claim through the British courts.

The rivalry is intense because Rolls-Royce and Pratt & Whitney are the only superjumbo engine suppliers. Rolls-Royce declined to comment on the lawsuit. The UK company will this week come under more pressure to explain whether the explosion of one of its engines on a Qantas flight last week was a one-off or caused by a wider design flaw. "Uncertainty is the problem for investors at the moment," said one Rolls-Royce shareholder.

Rolls' shares lost almost 10pc in two days, cutting the value of the FTSE 100-listed engine maker from £12.2bn on Wednesday night to around £11bn when the market closed on Friday. Shareholders are seeking clarity ahead of an update on Rolls-Royce's third-quarter trading on Friday.

Rolls-Royce declined to comment on the incident, beyond asking all the operators of the A380 using its Trent 900 engine to carry out a series of checks.

"We will continue to work closely with our customers as the investigation moves forward. This is at a very early stage and it would be inappropriate to draw any conclusions at this time," the notoriously taciturn Rolls said last week.

So far 20 A380s, operated by Qantas, Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines, are using Rolls' Trent 900 engine, with four engines per plane. The other 17 A380s in service are owned by Emirates and Air France, and use an engine built by GE-Pratt & Whitney of the US.

Airbus has another 196 A380s on order, and analysts are concerned that if the Trent 900 is found to have a design flaw, then some customers will switch to the GE-Pratt & Whitney engine instead.

At present, of the total 234 A380s ordered and delivered, 122 have been ordered with the GE-Pratt & Whitney engine, 90 with the Rolls' option and 22 have yet to choose.

Alan Joyce, chief executive of Qantas, believes a design fault probably caused the mid-air blowout: "This is probably most likely a material failure or some type of design issue." He said he hopes to have his grounded fleet of six A380s flying "within days".

Rolls-Royce declined to respond to his remarks.
