Phytopharm , derives its products from plant sources
Many of these "patented" plant products are from developing countries where native persons have used these plants for medicinal purposes .
is it ethical then that companies like phytopharm either directly or indirectly benefit from thousands of years of local knowledge without paying the natives anything ?
After all the products are realtively safe -- the locals wouldn't have been taking them for thousands of years
Natural product companies do not always make ethical investments
Just look at the recent case about p57 ( which acknowledged the rights of natives to benefit from THEIR discoveries ) and the rather strange statements made by phytopharm personnell about the "lost " SAN tribesmen who discoved this blockbuster plant thousdands of years ago. They have happily re-appeared to claim thier rightful share of the profits
Differing points of view with reasoned logic appreciated -- who knows I may even be converted
