Well the deal has gone through and Charles Stanley is no more a listed company. I hope to remain a customer, provided customer service remains so good! A sad loss to the UK listed company list though!

...from a few months ago...

Independent wealth manager Charles Stanley  (CAY) is an investment company, part of the Brokerage Services sector. CAY provides investment management services, financial planning and pension administration services. Current market cap is around £185m.

CAY this morning provided a reasonably encouraging trading update for Q1 FY21 (covering April- June 2021). Funds Under Management and Administration increased by another 5.9% through the 3 month period to £27.1b. (31st March £25.6b.)...from WealthOracleAM

Well my post of 27 June 2021 was spot on. I'm quite saddened by them losing their independence though. Anyone remember Oceana Consolidated PLC as they were once called and their ornate annual reports with the original share certificate on? I still have a few original copies of the annual reports...not the share certificates!

Truth is that Charles Stanley are a superb customer centric organisation but have somewhat lost their way over the last decade to digital disruptors that have been eating their lunch. My initial hunch that the Howard family might want to cash in given age considerations was spot on but.... nice to see management carry on.

My only initial concern was on the covenant of Charles Stanley Direct given that they hold all my personal investment portfolio in nominee accounts, but to be honest they are probably more robust after the deal. I will need to research further though and keep tabs on that and whether the new owners are still interested in this side of the business.

I was wrong! Was thinking of buying a month ago and didn't for the reason stated - I should've!

That doesn't look like a bad deal for shareholders.

I thing the fact that the Howards own 40% and they have no reason to sell means a takeover is unlikely - in the medium term. It's a bit like PZC in that respect.

It certainly is cheap. They need to get back to revenue growth. They are definitely a takeover candidate in my view, as they would be a great buy for Brewin Dolphin for example, if Howard decides to retire. I'd like to see them stay independent though.

Why is the market cap so low?

Rathbones have £55bn AUM and a market cap of £1.1bn

CS have AUM of £20bn and a market cap of £183m

How do you explain the difference? – If you factor on a pro-rata basis CS should be at over twice its current share price

topvest,

Any chance of revenue growth this year or just more of the same despite being being more digitally focussed ?

Agreed on the numbers. I think Charles Stanley are great, using Charles Stanley Direct, but I seem to be a minority view. Their customer service is second to none. In fact, I have never had poor service in well over a decade. From a company perspective they are good at retaining customers, but struggling on finding new ones. Revenue growth is the issue.

Pretty average figures I would say.

These “Wealth Managers” have effectively become expensive tracker funds. When they introduced the APCIMS index it was a complete cop out and meant( over time) it was the race to the bottom for fees. On top of this the client relationship managers take home a big percentage of the revenue.

Nice to see div held , not that they are short of cash, eps down as expected on lower markets, but worth holding at these low levels as some sort of recovery should feed through into next results.

Next results may be a bit glum , but looking forward , with markets bouncing this should really have the legs to spike up through 300p again. And cash rich it's pretty safe. Needs to make a transformational acquisition or perhaps be acquired at a fat premium and put out of its misery. Thinking it may be too small an outfit and seems unable to grow fum fast enough. But undoubtedly cheap and worth much more than it current share price suggests.

Well in my view:
- the good news is that their cost realignment project is working well. Turnaround achieved.
- the bad news is that they need to grow AUM better than they have been.
They now need to be growing the top line much better than they are.
